Sad news, RIP. He was huge in the eighties in Not the Nine O'Clock News, and Smith and Jones. Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones were an excellent double act. He was also very good in his own series Colin's Sandwich.

    Ah no, that's unexpected.

Used to like those head to head things with Griff Rhys Jones, and he seemed a decent enough bloke.

Good call, flutegirl. Colin's Sandwich is a lost classic. Long overdue a proper DVD release

A nice selection of some of Mel Smith's finest sketches here.

Includes Gerald The Gorilla, which is genius :)

    Bump!

Mel Smith: I've Sort of Done Things BBC2 9.45 PM
Rebecca Front narrates a celebration of the life and career of actor, writer and director Mel Smith, who died in July at the age of 60. His comedy partner Griff Rhys Jones, Not the Nine O'Clock News creator John Lloyd and screenwriter Richard Curtis are among those talking about his work both in front of and behind the camera. There are visits to Hammersmith's Latymer Upper School, where Mel's talents were first spotted, and Oxford University, where he honed his theatrical and comedy skills as a member of its dramatic society. Plus, home video footage, rare archive clips and a selection of classic sketches

followed by Comedy Connections - Alas Smith and Jones
The story behind one of comedy's most influential partnerships. Doon Mackichan tells of how Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones were thrown together as part of the Not the Nine O'Clock News team and went on to achieve huge success through their own show, Alas Smith and Jones, developing a wealth of comedy talent along the way, including Rory McGrath and Father Ted creators Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews
