Freesat: no signal

All this week, I've been having problems with my freesat box. A couple of channels disappeared during the week, then yesterday I could only get the BBCs and the ITVs, nothing above 200 basically, and now this morning, everything is gone. Every channel just says 'no signal or weak signal'.

In settings, both signals are showing as 'no signal'. I've done a s/w update, a reboot and turned it off at the wall, and I'm out of ideas :)

The fact that it has degraded so slowly over the week possibly points to a problem with the cabling in my front room over anything at the roof level, right? If I had to get a man out to check my signal, I'm going to be annoyed.

Have you tried fiddling with the F connector at the end of the "input 1" cable? Costs nothing and worth a go.

Heh, fiddling is the definition of what I've just done, and hey, signal's back! I basically loosened (or tightened) a bit then tightened (or loosened) it a bit and hey presto, job done.

Could the connectors be worn - is it something that can be picked up relatively cheaply for the (no doubt) next time it happens?

ETA: The connectors have been there since my original Sky Box was installed about 10 years ago.

F connectors tend to be rather flimsy but they are also cheap. Just wrapping some electricians tape round the connection point would be some protection.

I wouldn't describe the connectors as "flimsy". They're well up to the job they have to do & if the proper size is used, even the twist-on types provide a very secure connection. There's no point in taping indoor connections, unless you have an aversion to the odd stray piece of braid from the cable.

I think the F connector design is a classic example of "oh well it'll do" myself. They don't grab the cable end cleanly and firmly. Almost no one has the compression tool for the job outside the antenna profession.

You don't need any tools for the twist-on type. (Pliars can be handy though.)

You only have to compare them to the Belling-Lee type aerial plugs to see that they're really a rather clever design. Mechanically anyway, can't definitively comment on RF performance meself ...
