I have a tooth at the back that has a amalgam filling in it. But it the tooth needs another filling. So can I have it filled with composite instead of amalgam or would I have to have the filling removed and completely redone with composite?

(The reason I want it done with composite is I have a lot of amalgam fillings and dont want any more if I can avoid it)

    Thanks for any info :)

    1. If the filling need to be replace anway then its your chosice of restorative material, amalgam, composite, ceramic, gold etc....your dentist can advice the pros and cons of each.

    2. Yes the entire old filling should be removed.

Thanks for the reply :) I have heard when getting fillings removed there should be some precautions taken with a dam of some sort? When I said this to my dentist she said there is no need...

Should I find a dentist that specialises in filling removal? Do you know any?

Thanks again for any more info

Yeah a Rubber Dam can be used but its not essential. There is a lot of pseudoscientific stuff about amalgam toxicity, chelation and the like that is really just a scam to extract money. The person at the biggest risk is the dentist breathing in the amalgam dust.

You dont need a specialist any dentist can do this job.
