I've met 2 people lately that have been caught over the speed limit while towing a trailer. The speed limit when towing is on national roads is 80KPH. Can anyone tell me if its the same on the motorway?.

    Thanks,

    T

Depends what are you towing and what vehicle you are using to tow.
If you are towing with a car or van up 3.5 tonnes than indeed it's 80km/h.
If you are towing a trailer over 3.5 tonnes with a truck with GVW over 3.5 tonnes, then on motorway speed limit is 90km/h

I didn't know that, is it in the rules of the road?

    I don't think so.
RSA is pretty slacky with updating rules of the road or any of their leaflets.

F.e since 2009 buses and minibuses are allowed to travel at 100km/h on motorways, and as a result of this, they are not prohibited anymore to use most right-hand lane for overtaking, as trucks are.
Believe it or not, but most up to date version of rules of the road (issued in 2010) still claims that buses are not allowed to use most right-hand lanes on motorway.
Also in 2012 RSA issued a leaflet about motortway driving, and they still claim buses are not allowed to use that lane.

    It's pathetic IMO.

Here's the appropriate legislation in relation to trucks and trucks towing trailers being allowed to do 90km/h on motorways.
