Got word tonight that in spite of being due inclusion this time round, Spirit Radio have requested to not be included in the JNLR book due out on Thursday next. The apparent reason given is that they are unhappy about how their figures are to be grouped. I'm not sure if this complaint got to the MRBI in time for them to amend and adapt their survey. This call, if indeed fact, will only fuel speculation to it's allegedly minuscule listenership given that they now can't be compared to the other players in the market.

If I can get firmer word on this I will come back to this thread; likewise if anybody else can confirm or deny it then feel free to do so. I hope it is untrue but funnier things have happened in radio.

My guess would be Spirit's listenership would be so low it would be dwarfed by Near Fm. Spirit would be lucky to get a couple of hundred listeners in total a week.

they would have paid a contribution for the survey - having spent that money and deciding no to publish the figures would suggest that the numbers are bad.

How bad could they be that they would ask to be taken out of it?

There must be another reason for this, from what I'm aware, that JNLR inclusion is expensive?

Apparently its 20,000 euro (probably per annum) which is a fare bit, but really highlights how much IPSOS MRBI (the chaps who conduct the surveys) are earning.

In fairness, the survey is conducted on 15,600 per year- there has to be a decent cost for that alone - never mind the data processing. So 20k might sound excessive but there are some big costs associated to it as well.

Didn't realise the sample used was so large

It goes to show that it must be quite accurate, but in the days of digital radio ahead of us, will there be a way to digitally record the number of listeners at any one time ie. would it be possible to have a screen in each station showing the current number of listeners at that time?

No, not with DAB since you're not actually making a connection with the transmitter. It is possible to get an idea of the number of connections made to a stations on-line stream.

I e mailed the MRBI this morning and they confirmed that Spirit won't be listed on Thursday. As well, the station has withdrawn from the JNLR altogether so they won't be listed or included in future surveys.

I wonder how Spirit are going to spin this - just how bad where the results ?

Simple...Spirit should have used the same method as Christmas FM did to measure audience level :p
    **** the JNLR

This is nonsense. No radio station gets access to the figures until 12.45 on Thursday. If this was Spirit's first book, there's no way they would have information beforehand suggesting the figures were bad.

I think it's more likely a financial issue.

I don't think they would have been surveyed if they hadn't already paid - if its like the readership research, pay now, results later.

By participating in the JNLR a station can also access detailed figures on how rival stations are performing throughout the day and week. Stations have their own internal figures to gauge JNLR accuracy and to see how they are doing between books. Indeed, Spirit claimed last year some impressive figures off the back of a survey they commissioned last year; based on these result you'd wonder what have they to fear?

Truth be known, the anecdotal tales of no listener requests/feedback/texts coming from the stations staff would pour water on their claim.
