I was in the motor tax office getting a dew things declared off the road and when I asked about a car that I have the log book from that I completely scrapped she didn't know what the procedure was

the tax book is not in my name so i don't want to get the previous owner a tax bill on a car he cant declare off the road .

when i say scrapped i mean impossible to reassemble, chassis cut into multiple pieces

what does anyone here know about officially declaring it scrapped ?

I'm pretty sure that if the car is never going back on the road then you don't do anything....
    ...from Dept of Environment website:

Q16. I have an old vehicle in the garage that hasn’t been used for years. Do I need to declare it off the road?

A16. If you think that, at any stage in the future, the car might be put back on the road then, yes, you will need to make a declaration during the transition period from 1 July 2013 to 30 September 2013 to avoid having to pay arrears, back to the date of expiry of the last motor tax licence, when the vehicle is being put back on the road. If you are absolutely certain that the vehicle will never go back on the road, then you need to do nothing.

thanks for that , but if they had it that the tax book had to be returned we wouldn't have this trade in obsolete tax books

Over the water when they introduced the EU-standardised V5C Vehicle Registration Certificate to replace the V5 Vehicle Registration Document, all the old documents became invalid. They had to be exchanged for new ones. If the registered keeper wish, s/he could supply a stamped addressed envelope for the return of the now invalid old document for posterity.

Is there really a 'market' in brown log books ? How valuable is a car with an 'Irish' registration plate as opposed to a ZV or Year plate. Is, for example, a concours MGB with a ZV plate worth less than concours MGB with an Irish plate. Or is it more a case of people bordering the 30 year exemption tax rate, with a model of car that may be a few years either side of the limit, just to avoid the dreaded NCT and standard tax rates.

I'd certainly prefer to see more REAL Irish cars at shows....it'd mean that someone bothered to restore rather than take the easier option and buy a restored one and pretend they did the work themselves...oh, that never happens...;).....i like to see irish plates, even though they may not be real.....and i know theres a shortage of genuine restorable cars here...

I take your point, but does it really matter. A selection of American 'muscle' cars are never going to have original Irish plates. I have a few old cars, one of which was never marketed here, so in turn would never have had an Irish plate, one of my other cars was sold in so few numbers here, that to find an 'Irish' one left would be nigh on impossible.
We don't do a good job of looking after the 'new' cars we have now, so its no wonder very few early cars exist.
If there was a way to suggest to Govt to allow the re-issue of period numbers, it could be an option.
