question about intern placements

Can anyone help with some basic questions?

As I understand it, when we apply for intern positions on graduation, we are placed by percentile in our class, rather than numerical position. So, does this mean that your class size has a major effect?

Example: if I'm in a class of say 100 and I graduate #50 I'm right in the middle. But, if another person is from another college with 50 in their class, the middle person is 25th. So are we ranked equally?

In other words, someone placing 25th could be equal to someone who only came 50th in another college?

I think in all colleges that GEM and undergrad graduate together, so I assume your ranking is in the whole combined class. Does anyone know the total sizes of all the college graduating classes?

For this year, what ranking would have guaranteed you any place and what ranking would have pretty much assure you of your preferred choice? Is the demand pretty concentrated in the Dublin and nearby schemes?

I'm not sure if the rankings are published, and I doubt they will be.

Grads from different colleges are compared to their rank in their class. In your scenario, you're the 50th centile. But so is the other guy. A class of twenty people would move in steps of five along the centile (1st, 6th, 11th, 16th and so on). It's a crude system, but it seems to work.

Thanks. I didn't think they would be published alright, but I thought people would have an idea from experience and anecdote.

I didn't quite follow about moving in fives, could you explain like I'm 5?

What I was trying to get at is that it doesn't matter how many people are in the group, they'll be split evenly among the 100th centiles. 1st in the class will always be first, bottom will always be 100th or thereabouts. If you're in a class of twenty people and you come 2nd, you're not in the second centile, you're in the 5th or 6th (not sure which, but around there). If you're in a class of 200 and you come 5th, you're in the 3rd centile.
