the tour organisation book the hotels, as far as i know the teams are supposed to get their fair share of good and absolutely cr&p ones

wouldnt suprise me if team sky clean the rooms though as well as rider specific mattresses and pillows

They do -was in one of the service course videos, they go in each day, clean all the rooms and replace all bedding with a specific memory foam mattress and set of sheets/duvets etc for each rider

I imagine the problem is availability. You've got 220 riders in 22 teams. Each team probably has a support crew of 30? That's nearly 900 people rolling into one location for one or two nights, before you even get to the thousands of spectators. Many of these towns, from what I know are relatively small, so asking for high-quality accommodation for everyone is just not possible.

There's also the fair argument that all a rider needs is a toilet and a good bed, everything else is looked after. If the teams clean the rooms and provide a good mattress, then the rider is sorted. So does it matter if the window is falling off and the paint is flaking?
Although there is the counter argument that someone needs to feel comfortable and secure in where they are in order to sleep properly.

I wonder would it not be more cost effective for teams to use two of those monster double-decker touring busses as the riders' accommodation for the duration of the tour?

Europcar have a truck for the team to eat in, so it's probably not far off having a team bed truck!
