Jobseekers Allowance Review

I've been sent a letter saying a review is being done of my jobseeker status. I don't know why I have received this and it makes me feel a bit angry. I've only been on JA for a few weeks and I wonder why I am being targeted. It is a random process or is everyone who is new to JA reviewed?

It's not out of the usual, I had to go for a meeting with the CWO before for a JSA review basically got hounded about what I was doing to find work and what my home situation was. I told the truth and nothing changed. If you're entitled to it you're entitled to it. The whole experience can feel a bit condescending but that seems to be the norm when you claim JSA. It's not such a bad thing, it helps weed out the abusers.

Thanks elfy4eva. If it's just standard practice that's fine. It does all feel very condescending. Seems they like to kick you when you are already down.

You are not being targeted, and its not condescending. Your entitlement can be reviewed at any time to ensure you still meet the conditions for payment of JSA.
All JSA claims should be reviewed on a continuing basis, as per welfare.ie:

A persons entitlement to JA is reviewed on a continuing basis to determine that s/he continues to satisfy the conditions of entitlement. (See paragraphs above in relation to the Availability and GSW conditions).

The means of the person may be reviewed from time to time at the discretion of management, having regard to current work priorities and resources. The person may him/herself request a review of his or her means at any time.

I don't think you are being targeted. May I ask if you met with an inspector for your means test prior to being approved for JA and, if yes, if he or she requested evidence about job applications etc., as well?

I got one of those when I was out of work also and felt the same. It might even be computer generated. Its also used as way to recommend courses. Not a bad thing. You won't hear much from them again if you demonstrate that you are looking for work.

I got the same letter and I've been on JA for a while. It's just a standard check to make sure their records are up to date and ensure people aren't taking advantage.

Thanks everyone. Did anyone else get this letter?

Balagan, I didnt have an assessment. I wonder if thay is why this is happening now. Again, I don't mind all of this as long as it standard practice.
I am just a bit confused as to why they are reviewing me so soon after I started claiming. It's not like I've been years and years receiving assistance (unlike some people I know who have never been reviewed!!!).

It could very well be why you are for review now. For the past years, for the means tested JA, applicants would always have a meeting with an inspector, usual for he/she to call to the home, and they would go over your JA application and means documentation and ask for evidence of job seeking etc. Seems now as if they may be processing JA and then, if awarded, to replace the meeting with inspector by following up with review meeting after approval. It's very understandable to be uncomfortable about it but it seems just to be a change of approach.
