Wife test drove a scenic and zafiri before Xmas. Yeah It's an Eastern/central European guy owns it. Seemed like a nice fella.

One funny thing she said was the scenic had no power so he said I must have taken the turbo out 'her words' and then put a piece into engine and it drove fine. Needless to say I was sceptical when I heard this.

He also had given a price for prius {trade in) when we looked at zafiri and that changed considerably when she went to look at scenic.

He neglected to ring her back on the Monday with an updated offer when he said he would. So we went elsewhere.

Take from all that what you will

He was supposed to call me back today with a ball park trade in on wife’s car, no call.....also a bit iffy when there's no landline no. for the company only a mobile. The Opel Corsa he has for sale is actually a Vauxhall Corsa.

No big deal but some of the info contradicts itself on the ad, 1.2 diesel and then it says 1.3 in the description, NCT till Sept 2014 and then it says new NCT till Jan 2015! Stuff like that...

Mechanic friend of mine just told me to be wary of Northern Cars, as the under body takes a hammering and he’s getting a lot of them in with a lot of corrosion when it comes to servicing!!

Cheers for the reply I think I'll pass on this one!!

I also walked away. Flat battery when I arrived after arranging a test drive. A broken window reg on the car (a 2003 Megane Dynamique Hatch) which can happen but one would imagine you'd fix if trying to sell the car. He swapped the battery on the day but of course that meant the radio needed the code so I couldn't check that out.

He said the car was in good nick and serviced by his lads, but when I reviewed some receipts, it looked like T-Belt etc was changed and so was the head gasket which set some alarm bells ringing for me because it sounded like the belt had snapped. Mechanic friend looked it over found evidence of an recent oil leak but could not find the source or any sign of a recent repair.

Seemed fairly reasonable on the price but we walked away in the end because we felt we weren't getting the full story on the history.

Also, warranty was 3rd party so god knows where you'd end up with that

They've been putting salt on Irish roads for the past few years now aswell and in Dublin i think they have been using it for years due to the frosty weather they get up there. Your mechanic has a point though. Many northern and scottish cars usually have far more corrosion underneath than say cars from roi or southern england.

I suspect they use salt for a longer period of time in those
areas and also mix it with water to make it more effective but more corrosive at the same time.

Just wondering has anyone had any dealings with Best Choice Cars in Rathcoole in Co Dublin.

I saw a car they are selling and he's given me an ok price on the trade in so I'm tempted.

There's no landline however and he's a foreigner answering the phones but if anyones bought a car off him then I would appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance.

There was a thread on here about this company, probably this time last year? I will see if I can find the link. I recall that posters had walked away due to discrepancies with descriptions and issues with contacting the company.

Hi I'm the same looking at a car here seems reasonable has anyone had any dealings here lately?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 846 ✭✭✭kelbal

I did head out to them and was considering buying a car from them, but just happened to come across another deal elsewhere that suited me better.
However, they did seem a legit outfit to me. They seem properly established, with a working garage, signage out front. The guy I was dealing with was pleasant enough.
I've read bad reviews for other garages, so you can be sure if these guys were gangsters, bad reviews would have found their way to boards. I think they've been on the go for a few years at this stage, so they must be legit.
I think one of the other threads mentioned something about the guy being very vague about vehicle specs. I think they work on the basis of pricing their cars low so they can get them out asap. So if you see a car advertised on the web, chances are that particular car is already sold, but he's left the ad up there because he has another similar car coming in next week. That was the case anyway for the car I was looking to buy.

Hi all, I am looking at a car in BEST CHOICE CARS RATHCOOLE and was wondering if anyone has dealt with them and how they found them. I see an old post but it doesnt really give any info. How are they to deal with when you go back with an issue after buying for example?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

You're buying the car, not the dealer. Find the car that is right for you first, then think about where you're buying it.

What car are you looking at there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 fcdub

I think youre buying the dealer....for the first six months anyway. Im looking for a 7 seater a big one and not that fussy on brand, they have a lot.

Jesus what wheels have they got on that , there was always a large enough gap on the Accords unless lowered but them alloys look ridiculously small for it.

Have been communicating back and forth for the past week with a view to purchasing a black 03 FIAT Punto offered for sale. There were some delays as it missed its NCT then failed as a tyre had to be replaced. Finally arranged to view the car this morning ( had made them aware that I had to travel from Santry to Rathcoole ). When we arrived the car was up on the ramp having the said tyre replaced so they asked that we wait outside and they would bring the car out in 10 minutes. Duly brought car out for inspection. We had a good look at same and took it for a test drive accompanied by whom we believe to be the proprietor. Seemed a decent enough little car for the money but did notice the lock was missing from the front passenger door ( The receiver hole which was damaged was covered up with a rubber plug, on removing this you had access to open the door without the need of keys, the lock on the drivers door was loose and hanging out, there was damage to the internal drivers mirror adjuster surround and the central locking unlocking did not work. Seller said someone had tried to steal it. There were another few small low priority issues. We said we would purchase the car, paying a deposit now, for the asking price with a 3 month engine and gearbox warranty if they would repair/replace the locks and have it re NCT'd.This was agreed so imagine my surprise when after walking to my car to get €250 the seller said he could not sell me the car as he had taken a deposit earlier. When I expressed my dismay he said,
He had said nothing and let us view and test drive the car as he did not think we would buy it,
The person who had left the deposit had done so at 9am.
Strange given that they do not open until 10am.
    I believe this dealer,
    (1) hoped a buyer might not notice the issue with the locks,
    (2) be aware of the high cost of replacements,
    (3) appreciate the difficulties associated with repairing the body damage around the passenger side lock receiver.
    (4) Would later hide behind the engine and gearbox only warranty ( doors not included)
Perhaps there are other issues with the car but we could not see anything else.
I believe they were not honest enough to admit the repairs would be costly and increase the price of the car. Depending on the cost we might have been prepared to pay a little extra who knows.
We value honesty highly and at the end of the day this dealer was dishonest in lying about another potential buyer leaving a deposit. If they lied about this what else might they be lying about so I would caution any potential customers to consider purchasing elsewhere but if they must go here then do exercise very great caution and be prepared to be disappointed if you do other than simply hand over you cash without question. Pity we liked the little car.

Delighted they would not sell us the car. Got a lovely little 03 Punto from Declan Gill Motors on the Swords Road in Santry on Thursday. Nice people, straight forward, no messing, good price, serviced on day of purchase, new NCT, warranty included. I know only time will tell with the car but would I go there again. Yes.

Just to say Gills took the car back the following week and gave it a top class valeting inside and out at their suggestion and free of charge. They also fitted new mats, hubcaps and an aerial. God they are so so easy to deal with. Pleasant, helpful and honest.

I know this is old, but just to warn ppl of my experience...

Put deposit on a car, checked the Irish reg on cartell.ie which told me it was an imported English car (with an Irish reg?)

When I checked it on the uk motor check website I found out it was a right off AND had been recalled due to faulty hand brakes.

Fair enough they said they will refund the deposit but the car is still up for sale- please people CHECK THE CAR before you buy. It was a family car so my kids safety is of utmost importance to me...

The thing that would annoy me about this case is that you say they refunded the deposit, but I would say they knew the car was a write off when selling it.

I would always ask has this car been involved in any accidents. I am not sure if they are obliged to tell you if they know.

What's unusual about a second hand car from the UK now having an Irish reg? It just means the car was bought and imported from the UK and re-registered over here, half the used cars in the country probably came from the UK at this stage.

Also there are different levels of write off in the UK. A Category D write off means the car was involved in a minor crash like a fender bender and the insurance company decided it was an economical write off but it was still safe to repair and put back on the road. Again it is not unheard of for a used Irish car to have had a bumper or wing replaced due to a minor accident. The only difference is that in the UK these things are logged on a database. Category B write offs are a different kettle of fish though and these are not fit to be put back on the road. However the fact the garage did not tell you this up front is bad form and dishonest, and you were right to demand your deposit back.

Recalls are the same, nearly every make and model of car has had a manufacturer's recall at some stage, nothing unusual about that.

what catagory of write off was it? Car can be repairable but written off by insurance as they view it as beyond economical repair.

I don't know. The friend in the garage sent me on a picture of the check. All it said was "UK written off"

Hi I also went looking at a car there today. Great looking very clean good price etc....
But when I did a HPI check in the UK it was 4 owners and a category D Write off ..
This write off can be fixed but will affect your insurance and without knowing where or who did the repairs I will be walking away.

Pity they weren't honest would of saved me a two hour drive up to them

Myself and my wife looked at a car up here turned out after we done a check that it was written off in England category D. Plus previous plates came back as a completely different color car. Always Always do a check before buying any car. Mywheels.ie is a good site.
