It's amazing how quickly the SyFy channel gets these movies made.

I downloaded this a few weeks ago, with the idea firmly in my head that it was Pacific Rim but was called Atlantic Rim in the US.

    How disappointed I was.

Actually, the effects weren't quite as horrific as I expected given the miniscule budget and some of the Asylums previous efforts, but the interior shots look like they were cobbled together using a wardrobe and leftover scrap from a plumbing job somewhere in the back of the studio.

In their favor though, the same studio brought us this:

I LOVE Asylum films. They're exactly what they are, shameless rip offs and bizarre monster movies. I'd love to get a movie made by them.

Maximoose's comment above sums up why those guys make these knock off films. They produce at least a dozen films a year. Most prolific independent studio in Hollywood.

    Here's the producer's IMDB credits  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0490375/

Producer is one thing. Looking at The Asylum's filmography on wiki is crazy. Like going by that and imdb you can see Leigh Scott directed 6 films within a year.

Cameron could learn a lot from him.

Now I'm wondering what ever happened Troma

To Asylum's credit, the CG isn't that bad at all, and with better lighting would look much better. It's pretty much the shitty lighting that makes it look terrible.

    Sharknado:

"We're gonna need a bigger chopper"

That's Tara Reid & one of the guys from Beverly Hills 90210. Heard on the radio today that they're making a sequel based in NYC.

If they really make movies that fast, it'll probably be on at the start of August

Lighting is pretty sh!tty, but they don't do themselves any favours by not making much effort with their colour grading, or their sound mixing for that.

Should really be called Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Definitely, but the lighting is the first thing that sticks out.

Just watched Atlantic Rim, and they're kind of making me eat my words on this one. NOTHING can save the CG on this one. Some genuinely funny moments:

The main guys inability to say certain words, resulting in a splurge of nonsense
Describing a scene that just happened to the two characters that weren't there
The Special Weapons each "Bot" had, Blue having a hammer, Green having a sword and Red having a paddle
    "Get [X] on the horn!"
    "It's really large!"

And, my favourite dialogue in any movie, including Buscemi's rant in the car in Ghost World:

"Your Dad is outside, he sent me here to rescue you!"
    "NO! Go away!"
"Well, I'm a superhero, then, come on."
    "Really?"
"Yeah, hurry up or you'll burn to death."
