Tiagra brake cable ferrule doens't fit in brake

I mounted a Tiagra 4600 Brake Caliper front brake yesterday on a bike that I'm building.
All good except the part that I think is a ferrule for the end of the brake cable does't fit into the barrel adjuster on the brake caliper. It's minutely too big.
This is what it looks like
A quick google found me someone else moaning that their tiagra ferrule won't fit in their tiagra brake.
Is this part really a brake ferrule - I think the gear cables just use plastic end piece ferrules.
Why would a tiagra brake ferrule not fit in a tiagra brake barrel adjuster - except for them being complete b*****ds!
Do I need it - I assume I do and I'll have to go to the LBS and get some different ones that actually fit in tiagra.
I've never even ridden a drop-bar bike before so I'm having to google/youtube all the bits as I go. Shimano could do with better instructions but I'm having fun
