back to work advice please

    A friend (really)recently became employed again and he is wondering should he be paying income tax because the last time he was unemployed and went back to work he did not pay tax for a few months but this time paid tax this week which is his first pay check. first time out of work for 10 months this time 15 months. back to same employer on both occasions, all advice is appreciated thanks. also heard of revenue job assist extra tax credits, should he apply for these, he has 2 kids and times have been tough for him(as for lots of people)and hoping to get good advice here, thanks again
