Hi all, have been using the air conditioning on my mondeo during this "heatwave",but the lack of cold air has me dumbfounded. Its the 2008 zetec spec, so it has the electric auto unit thingy in it. All it blows out is warm air when the a/c button is on! Am i doing something wrong, or has anyone else got this problem, Cheers. :D

These have issues with compressors failing and also pipes breaking leading to lack of gas. So you need to get it diagnosed to see what is going on.

the fact that you only use it in hot weather may have caused it to fail. Car A/C needs to be used regularly. I use mine 365 days a year as it has benefits in all seasons. I think people are often worried about fuel economy but modern units are pretty efficient.

The 2008 ford Mondeo suffer with faulty condensers. We have replaced heaps of them in our garage.
    Also Bigcheeze is correct.
When you use the air conditioning in your vehicle the gas circulates through the system and carries with it a quantity of oil. This oil is primarily for lubricating essential components but also lubricates joints/seals and o-rings. If the AC is not used for extended periods of time these seals will become dry and thus the gas can leak from the system. It is a little more technical than just dry seals but essential it is from not using the system that can cause the gas to leak.

However a 2008 car is still pretty new and in my opinion not using your AC would not cause a leak yet. I would be guessing the condenser. I'm not sure but I think €275 is the total cost for replacing the condenser and servicing the AC in the ford mondeo.

All it needed was to be re-gassed in the end, quick 40 min job in the local ford dealer, set me back €90 though

In terms of problems, it could have been much worse than a simple regassing! In future, remember you need to use air conditioning for at least 30 minutes every month.

It astounds me how many people don't use air conditioning in the winter - perhaps the time of the year when it is by far at its most useful in the Irish climate.

If you start using it during the winter you'll quickly realise that misted up windows are a thing of the past, and you won't be spending half an hour trying to defrost the windows on a very cold morning when the car has frosted over :).

How did it end up with no gas in the system though? It more than likely has a leak somewhere.

I've had the car since July 2012 and since i bought it the air-con was never cold. Got it re-gassed July this year and it was checked for leaks at the same time, none showed up. I've been using it on an almost daily basis since and it's working no bother.

did you use it much since this time last year ?

Now and again, once I got it re-gassed, there was no warm weather as such that I needed it. Nonetheless I turned it on every so often for a while, even in the winter, as suggested, but just noticed one day the air went warm... that was January maybe February.

I spoke to Atlas about a gas recharge and what I was told is they check the system first for leaks etc before they fill the system. I would go back to the dealer who refilled the system and get them to find out why it is leaking again. Probably best to get someone to ring and ask what is involved in the re-charge, system test etc.

got my 05 focus re gassed today in fast fit, 39 euro. AC hasn't worked since I bought it 1.5 years ago. They say they carry out pressure test etc. And check for leaks.
worked great today and can feel the ac unit kicking in now
will see how long it lasts...

Went and dug out the receipt. It actually says that they checked for leaks prior to the re-gas... I dunno, not that bothered about it anymore, I'll survive!

Those Mondeos are awful for air con leaks. Would drive me crazy having no air con personally.

Everyone I know with one has the same issue with aircon it is very annoying. Pity as the previous model has a great system. Used to freeze the windscreen on mine if you set it to minimum and fans to defrost setting.

The Mk4 Mondeo isn't half the car the Mk3 was. They cut corners with it everywhere and it shows IMO.

Yup fully agree. No lock on the fuel filler cover was another great one.

Same boat 2008 Mondeo zetec estate bought 2011. Got it refilled last June in fast fit who said the refill included a pressure test. Stopped working after about three months. Is it most likely the compressor? How much money am I looking at if the leak is else where?
Rear suspension needs work as well which is going to cost a good few bob. Ford garage were quoting €600 or so at last service with them.
Really like the car hoping now I wasn't better going with the Mk3 options at the time when I was buying.
