If I bought a MacBook Air in the Usa and declared it on the way back. Would the vat I have to pay be based on the Irish price or what I paid in the Usa? MacBook Air 13inch is €1149 here and €840 in the Usa. Cheers

You pay VAT on the value here, so the Irish price. The €1149 includes VAT already of around €215 so that is what you should be charged. In reality you won't know what they'll charge until you declare it. Perhaps try to find a number for customs at the airport and ask before you go.

Just to clear, it would be on the price you paid for it, not the price on the Irish Apple Store.

It would be based on the invoice price in the USA - ie, what you actually paid for it in the store - ie, the price plus local taxes and they then calculate the 23% on top of it here.

So if the machine was $999, sales tax of, say $90, the value for customs is $1,089 - that's then converted to euros - add then add VAT at 23%.

You will need to have the physical receipt/invoice with you making the declaration.

Cheers thanks, it looks like it wouldn't be worth my while getting from the us by the time I pay sales tax, vat and then buy an adapter for it.

    I've looked into it...

Still thinking about it. Hard to believe some of the success stories with customs

Your forgetting duty of 14% on top of VAT

    No duty on laptops.

I'm just back from NYC and bought a 13'' MBP retina while there and didn't declare it. I just kept the laptop in my carry on luggage on the way home and put the box in my case. Very rare that you'd be caught that way.

Did the exact same thing recently.

    Cheers thanks

I spotted that I can order a MacBook online with the Irish keyboard and it'll be ready for store pickup within 3 days in NY. This with a plug switch I should be fairly safe. Cheers for the replys!

    Bought mine, in Philly

    Left box behind

    ONE THING....

Boot up the mac and go through setup process, if accidently stopped, nothing worse than saying I bought it with me ad then turn it on and it says "Welcome to your new Mac"

    :D
