    Hi,

I hope Im asking at the right forum. I am viewing a site with old house and just wondering if there is problem locating a new septic tank and percolation system to the front of the old house from a planning point of interest? I note they always are in the back in ireland and also is there any special distance that I would have to keep this system from the local road in front of the house if it is allowed to the front.
It is a big site but all the space is at front of old house. I will get professional to check this out but I cannot waste my money so if this is a not allowed, I can just forget it right now.

Short answer is that there is nothing to prevent you from having a waste water treatment system/percolation area to the front of the house. As you say there are separation distances that have to be achieved but a site assessment will determine all these issues.

There's nothing wrong with placing it at the front, as long as you get the separation distances - the main ones are 10 metres from the house for the percolation area, and 7 metres for the treatment unit. Also need to keep as far away from the bored well as possible, if there is a bored well there.

It often makes more sense to put it around the front, seeing as the rear of the house is usually more private, and where you'll do your sitting out on a summer's evening, especially if the house is north-facing.
