Who? I've nearly forgotten them at this stage.. OTB is back to where it was for me at this stage.. I dont really have any reason to change to Second Captains... I think that's an awful stupid name as well.

    They are probably joining 2fm.

No accounting for some people's tastes. Have you listened to any of the podcasts?

Ya but come on you listen to Liveline on a daily basis, you clearly have a tolerance for ****e radio broadcasters a lot of others here don't posess :-)

I think the new team are like a local radio station level TippFM or Midlands radio. Not that bad, does the job but i wouldn't particularly enjoy it. Parkinson's contributions really irk me though. I've tried to listen but I can't warm to him.

The second captains team are actually funny, knowledgeable and entertaining to listen to.

That's it, Fanboys. Keep the dream alive!!!!

The sporting and media world continues to turn, as good as the show was when the Second Captains did it.

Even now, JonathanAnon, you daren't criticise them or dismiss them. Their wandering tribe of refugee fans will come on here and slap you down!!!

It's RTE alright, but my guess would be TV.

More people listen to the Second Captains soundcloud than tune into 2fm's Game on. Then there's the podcast listeners, for which we have no figures but it has been the number one in the itunes podcast chart for the past 9 weeks. Which would suggest that of the people who regularly listened to old show your view would be shared by a minority. Plus, we haven't had JNLR figures for the new crew yet.

I see that. I think there is more of a kind of nostalgia / supporting the guys who were "fighting the system" going on.. With regard to the podcasts, I've removed iTunes and am currently looking for a good replacement (which I havent found), so I havent been podcasting much the last while.. I will certainly listen to it when I return to podcasting properly...

You see what? 3 people disagree with a post you made and that amounts to "fanboys" slapping you down, ffs.

I am one of the fanboys and don't mind if you criticise the originals.

Its the implied praise of the new team I don't understand.

    How about a poll?

    Second Captains v Team Judas

Team Judas? That's just bollox. I wish no ill will on the new lads. I wish them the best of luck, they are just not as good as the old team. I wouldn't mind if Parkinson lost his voice for the months of February to the third Sunday in September.

As for Fanboys? Stupid expression, what is wrong with positive contributions to debate the negative?

Now that RTE have lost The Premiership highlights, maybe they might be looking at a weekly magazine-type show discussing football matters. Cue Ken Early's pearls of wisdom and his philosophical musings, hosted by Eoin McDevitt.

    Cannot see that happening unfortunately.

RTE would be far more likely to go with John Giles' pearls of wisdom hosted by Bill O'Herlihy.

    Same ole same ole.

I dunno, Bill has announced that he's retiring next year. It would make sense for them to bring in a new sports anchor like McDevitt now.

Not saying that's what this announcement is (I think it's more likely to be a change to the podcast itself).

It's not a case of hating one team and liking another. I just want something that's entertaining in the background between 7pm-9pm/10pm. And either team can do the job well.. Sure the lads were better and more polished, but they've had years to work on it. The present team is just the address book of Ger Gilroy's phone (in alphabetical order) on the night that they left..

I do think it's interesting that Paul Kimmage chose to stick by Newstalk, and not his biggest fan Eoin McDevitt..

I think Daragh Moloney has that one in the bag..

Peter Collins and Jon Kenny would probably be more likely than Eoin too.

I agree, It's going to be podcast related. They should have learned from the last time though and not have made such a big deal of it, because if it is not a new radio show the response is going to an underwhelmed..."is that it?".

He's been a guest on the podcasts as well.

Bill has said on several.occasions that Darragh moloney will be his replacement on Rte when the next world cup comes to a.conclusion.

    .

You know I thought that might be the case when you made your comment about the new team being now up to the level of the old team. I would be looking for something more than background noise personally.

And I wouldn't agree with the description of the old lads as polished either. Darragh Moloney and a few of the RTE new bloods are what I would call polished and that is not meant as a compliment by the way.

It was the irreverence of Ken and to a lesser extent Murph that was so unique. Saying they were good because they were at it for years misses the point.

Now you are just displaying your ignorance. Cian Murtagh was the regular sports reader in the previous show. Joe Molloy was Gilroys regular co presenter on weekend sport. Parkinson had been a contributor to Newstalk sport previously also to the best of my knowledge. Conor Deegan was also a regular contributor when the lads presented it.

Hardly think RTE will put an entertaining sports show on TV they normally like to just make poor versions of other broadcasters output and give the jobs to the same terrible pool of "talent".In fact not sure I'd like to see the lads on RTE would be very watered down I reckon and I think the radio suits as 2 or 3 hours gets thru a lot of sport were as on tv 2 or 3 hours means Tubs.

RTE did give the more MOR Ger a run at it a while ago, without success. (Though I must say that Neil Lennon's appearance on whatever it was called was very entertaining). Hardly likely then to give Confused and Confusing Ken a run out, I would have thought.

I'm pleased with that, it's better than what I was expecting tbh. The one thing I was really going to miss once the football season kicks off was Ken's football show. Now there's going to be two shows a week - that will do.:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,238 ✭✭✭✭Diabhal Beag

Delighted personally because I haven't really been free to listen most evenings for the last year. Dead handy to be able to listen to them on the drive in the mornings. At least they'll be able to focus on football properly.

Yeah suits me, can listen to those two and skip the others unless there's something particularly interesting. I winder are they doing this to justify paying the boys a full-time wage.

Jaysus, I hope they kept their gardening job...A website podcast won't feed a family or pay off a mortgage.

I dont know, each of their podcasts so far has averaged 20,000 soundcloud downloads via the irish times site and that doesnt include their hits on the itunes chart where they've been number 1 since they started their podcasts with the irish times. What might be interesting is if their 4 nights a week proves popular enough might the lads consider broadcasting shows live online , even possibly going head to head with Off The ball at 7pm ??? :D

I think its good news that more podcasts will be available, the dropping of BOD was a good example of how they'd have been completely behind if they hadn't done the extra show. I find I listen to OTB in the evenings still and then the Podcast at the weekend.

He was certainly tired and emotional. Shame it was so short, was very entertaining. Delighted there will be more shows in future.

Does it matter? It's there money to spend whatever way they want. If this works and they stay it will be great publicity for the IT.

Only problem is the Second Captains has taken on a life of it's own, seemed like that since the Euro's in the summer. They won't to be out there and do their own thing but need an outlet so they have to associate with some organisation, if the IT lets them do there thing it could be money well spent.

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but a pilot for what? A regular tv show? Would they all be live shows? How often would they happen?

Does it say it will be broadcast live or what's the deal?

Recorded in front of a Live audience. No mention of when it will be televised.

A pilot does not necessarily mean it will be televised but I'd be positive enough that they can churn out something good, especially since Eoin had his own Setanta show.

I recently got an internet radio for the kitchen, lots of podcasts are available under sport, mostly from off the ball or the 2fm evening show.
Can anybody tell me if the second captains podcast could be found on it or is the content limited to Radio stations output? It'd be handy for me to listen while I was preparing dinner or whatever.
