Cheapskates League

Anyone have any interest in a cheapskates league? The general idea being you play the game as normal however you keep at least 20 (30?) million in the bank at all times.

I reckon it's possible to still be competitive whilst avoiding all the star names. Defensively it shouldn't be an issue - many take this approach anyways. It might be harder to find goals but there's always a Benteke or Michu out there if you look had enough.

I done this last season and nearly ended up doing better with my so called cheap team:(

Gonna put an experimental team out to test how well it can do. Picked 3 players from each of the newly promoted teams and then 3 from the two lowest placed survivors last season.

Surely it would be a better idea to go with a budget of 80m

A team without players involved in European competition could be a way to go. i.e no top 6 players?

    Better in what way?

    Ok, it's on.

"20M in the bank or you're out"
    493261-123210

    First stab:

    Boruc
    Rosenior Shaw Lowton
De Guzman Nolan Brunt Mirallas Brady
    Kone Lambert

    Jakupovic McNaughton Ward Phillips

Obviously, the bench is a shambles. Will need some pre-season fixtures to figure out who the 4m defenders to have are - must avoid all temptations to sign up McShane.

Have revised down the handicap to 10M. 20M was just too hard to have a team that wasn't going to fall apart after 1 week.

My motivation for doing the handicap in the first place is that my work league has gone from being very competitive and good crack to one where I had it won by the end of September and no-one has any more interest. I'd rather win the work league and have the crack and come nowhere overall than finish in the top 1000.

My defence is a little expensive but I expect to ship out Terry after GW1 and Lescott after GW4.

This leaves me with 10M in the bank. Any obvious fails?

    Boruc
    Terry Chambers Lescott
    Mata Nolan Brunt Mirallas
    Bony Anelka Lambert

    Vorm Brady Turner Turner

    After some strategising, went with:

    Cech
    Toure Terry Rat
    Nolan Tonev Mirallas Hazard (c)
    Anelka Soldado Agbonlahor

    Harper Tettey Chambers Chester

Finished on 79 points, 383K in the world. Would consider that a par score in normal circumstances. Will probably look back on this season as VP and non-VP weeks. Any week he scores more than 1 goal I'm going to struggle to compete.

Rat not playing was a fail, even though Chambers came in with a clean sheet. That 1 million could have been better spent elsewhere, primarily Tonev, who was definitely a gamble. I knew before the West Brom game started that Anelka was a bad choice too. Hearing the manager say he was more a playmaker now that he's getting older was not what a Fantasy Football Manager wants to hear of his strikers.

Have played the wildcard as planned. 2 reasons: I need the best start possible. I need to get on every bandwagon to recoup the cash.

    Edit: Team Value - 100.5M

My cheapskates team scored 60 this week which was better than my real team. Funny game.

Like many, a mediocre week. 48 points. 1,013,241 in the GW. Marginally up to 375,203 in the world. Team value £91.6m + 10M in the bank.

    Boruc
    Zabaleta Shaw Coleman
    Silva Nolan Barkley Mirallas
    Soldado Dzeko(c) Lambert

    Harper Cole Whittaker Chester

In classic wildcard fashion my previous team would have by far outperformed the one above.

Team will be 100% unchanged for next week. Hoping "mediocre" isn't becoming a trend.

Just after joining but I have had 20m in the bank for the first 2 weeks and have again this weekend so obviously not hoping for much but I think I have had 2 decent weeks

    On 107 so far

    Team now is

    Myhill

    Yanga Mbiwa Collins Garrido

Barkely Nolan Johnson De Guzman Brady

    Giroud Lambert

Another mediocre week. 46 points. Total of 173. 1,164,695 in the GW. Down to 420,743 in the world. Team value £92.4 + £10.6M in the bank - have already brought in Brady for Cole.

I need to get away from having the same players as everyone else. I'm playing the game as if I was on a level playing field and each week and finding myself cursing that I don't the one or 2 players that I really want.

I just can't afford anyone over 9 million - though I may make an exception for Benteke as I think he'll cause havok every time he plays.

Bent in for Dzeko looks like my second free transfer unless the internationals throw up any injuries.

Yet another average week. 48 points - again. Total of 221. 1,433,134 in the GW. Down to 487,303 in the world. Team value £92.3 + £10.5M in the bank - have already brought in Giroud for Dzeko.

Soldado as captain was a disappointment. As my most expensive player he needs to be more consistent. In general my captaincy choices have let me down.

Silva getting injured on internationals was probably a blessing as it forced me to start restructuring my team towards where I think it needs to be. Brought in Eriksen. Next week Benteke for Soldado, though may give that a week and save the transfer dependant upon this weekends performances and price watch.

forgot i joined this league, i had 20m in the bank and no transfers since the start, sorted now, think I'm nailed on for this week though

A somewhat incredulous 50 for the GW 1,185,225 in the world. 486,614 overall.

Scores of 48,46,48,50 over the last 4 weeks lead me to believe the Fantasy Football Gods are trolling me.

Saturday was definitely a money ball day. All my expensive players again failed to deliver today. Captaincy was another fail.

55 points. 797,935 in the GW. Slightly up to 407,045 in the world. Team value £93.2M. £10.5M in the bank.

A better week and the first time I only had myself to blame for not scoring heavily. Captain Lambert worked out but leaving Barkley on the bench was frustrating whilst bringing in Bent for Soldado was a complete brain freeze. Was going to bring in Sturridge all week but just had one of those moments where I see could see him rolling back the years and was seduced by his good fixtures.

Lesson re-learned for the millionth time, when a team is as bad as Fulham then they never have good fixtures.

Instantly transferred in Sturridge on Sunday evening.

45 points. 610,469 in the GW. Up to 332,526 in the world. Team value £93.5M. £10.5M in the bank.

A very lucky week, in that everyone else did even worse. Sturridge (c) + Boruc got 28 of the 45 points. Only had 10 players. Team looks really poor at the moment. So much so that I can't decide who to get rid and will (hopefully) not make any transfer next GW so I can do some proper rearranging of the deckchairs the week after.

Am heavily invested in Everton and Southampton at the moment, which has worked out well so far, but their fixtures look poor in the medium term. All of these mid-table sides get a good run during the season. Generally this coincides with them getting kind fixtures for 4 or 5 weeks.

Swansea looks like the destination for my minuscule funds.

52 points. Below average. My crappy team is finally catching up on me as the first high scoring week in a long time set me back. Only 10 players again.

Swansea was a good call. Brought in Bony for Lambert. Feel slightly aggrieved that -combined - Bony, Giroud, Sturridge got 2 goals and 2 assist but not a single bp.
