Holyhead to London advice

I'll be doing the Holyhead-London trip by road in August, both directions. Google Maps is recommending A55 and the M40 as the best route. I'm looking for suggestions as to where to break the journey. I'd really prefer something more interesting than a soulless motorway service station, but I don't want to spend a lot of time travelling to/from. Is there anywhere good to stop for a bit of lunch near the M40 to break the journey, maybe somewhere around Crewe, Stoke or Birmingham?

I do this at least once a month in both directions.

A55-A494-M56-M6-M42-M40 is the full route and is very good for west and south London. Many woud take M6 south to M1 is going to north or east London. M1 will tend to have more trucks than M40 but it's fair to say that the M6 will likely be the busiest section.

With the exception of a couple of short 50mph sections, it's 70mph all the way.

Personally, I will stop at Chester or Bicester outlets if I'm interested in shopping or food outside the motorway norms and this is generally to keep it to a reasonable time. Diversion from the motorway even to a pre planned pub or restaurant will easily add a couple of hours to an already long day.

On your way back, my recommendation is to take the 11:50 ferry and leave London at (say) 5:15 or 5:30 stopping for a fantastic cooked breakfast at Keele services; it's nothing like the putrid crap served up elsewhere.
