    Hi,
in response to the recent spying allegations I am in the process of switching to Ubuntu/Tor full time. One minor irritation I get constantly is the pc going into security standby ALL THE time after about 5 mins.My fingers are bleeding from retyping the password. I searched for a solution and was sent to......

System -> Administration -> Login Screen Setup
General Tab -> Automatic Login ->
Login a user automatically on first bootup (Checked)
    Automatic login username: Select "system_username"

In the top rh corner I find System settings......but nothing else from the list of instructions.......while typing this I have been asked for the password 3 times,....its getting to a point where Im thinking of going back to Windose at this stage because of this one stupid oversight. I know we are being spied on but it cant be this bad. Windows has one lovely term in options......."NEVER" ........and that's when I want my pc to go to standby. Other than that the transition is going reasonably well. Micheal Hayden (Joe 90) can get into my pc anytime he wants........and he can bring the whole War Room with him if he wants.

    Ubuntu bad choice https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/10/privacy-ubuntu-1210-amazon-ads-and-data-leaks

tor...dog slow, you couldnt possibly use full time

There is something up with your config, password normally only get ask'd if your trying to do some action that requires elevated privilege ie installing a program, or changing a system setting.

eta: misread your post, as mentioned below, just hit start key and type lock, turn off screen lock if desired or adjust timer

Search for power management, display or screen lock - I'm not sure where it is in ubuntu. There should be an option to change the delay. I might find exactly where it is if you share what version of ubuntu you use.

Aah! The ever cheery Mr. Stallman. If only life were so simple. Sometimes non-free is just unavoidable for the average Joe.

Yes, a point which he concedes, but the aim all the time should be 'free'.

To do as he has done is anything but simple ..... and I doubt there are many others who manage it.

Nevertheless the goal should be in mind all the time ;)

And I wish it would happen, but I am realistic enough to see that big corporations don't like the idea of "free" sometimes.
He himelf seems a reasonable guy, but some of his erm, "more militant" supporters can be unbearable.
Fact is that Microsoft rule the roost, and they love everything proprietary, suits their model, and manufacturers follow that heavy influence.
Ubuntu seem to be treading a similar route lately in that they are pulling away from all the rest with the likes of Mir, I only hope that the Linux community as a whole can overcome these emerging splits. Money talks.

I have always held that view about Ubuntu .... it has never been promoted as a version of Linux, but as something else, somehow different.
To even find the word Linux on any of the Ubuntu blurb or info sites is a challenge.
That, IMO, is a deliberate means of denying by omission, Ubuntu's standing on top of GNU & Linux.
    It is misleading, at minimum.

At least with Apple & MS etc you can clearly see what they represent .... corporate & proprietary business.

Canonical seems to want to disguise itself .... I don't like it, and won't use their product or recommend it, because of that.

To be honest, he's a bit of a nutcase.

He's a good reference point - like the north pole. You do not necessarily want to go there, but it's always worth to know where it is.
