Train positioning on platform

can someone explain to me why the trains in connolly and many other stations go right to the end of the platform, seemingly as far from the entrance/exit as possible?

there must be a practical reason for it?

That's where the signal is which tells them whether or not they can depart. More practically, every train stops in the same location (with some exceptions), some are simply comprised of less carriages.

it just seems to me that its a fairly new thing (maybe months, or a yearish) that they stop at the very end of the platform but maybe its because ive only increased my train / dart usage lately.

i suppose the signals thing makes sense, but ive seen different trains do it differently. would the dart and commuter trains run off different signals on the platform?

At the end of a lot of platforms, particularly in the DART area there are mirrors and CCTV monitors at to help the driver see when the passengers are clear of the train, the train must pull to the end of the platform to see these. Also if the train always pulls to the end of the platform there is less chance of part of a long train being accidentally left off the end of the platform

It bugs the hell out of me as in my local station the exit is at the opposite end of the platform.

Why can't IE put in mirrors half way down the platform to cater for customers who are travelling on shorter trains?

Irish Rail have signs up recently in some stations "2 3 4 Car Stop" presumably so the short trains don't go all the way to the end of the platform if the entrance to the station is at the other end. They don't seem to be using them yet.

I saw some on the southbound platform at Dalkey last week.

The 2,3,4 signs are at Howth Junction platform 4, Killester, Clontraf Road and Pearse stations and more. Some drivers do actually stop at them and some don't and ignor them from what I have seen over the past month or so.

The pole supporting the mirror may obstruct the platform, so it may be impractical in some locations.

Nonsense. Suspend the mirror from the ceiling and it won't obstruct anything

yes and if there is no ceiling, use skyhooks.

I'm sure a pole on the platform isn't the only way to mount a mirror.

Noticed this at Castleknock station the other day, usually I stand somewhere in the middle of the platform to catch a train (outbound from the city direction), but this time the train didn't stop until the very end of the platform - which is as far from the exit as possible.

The train was a single 29000 set.
