Chainring studs.

Why does my outer chainring have studs embedded in it? They seem very much 'surplus to requriements'

The chainring is a Stronglight 52T on a Shimano 105 spider and the studs are fouling the chain when it is on the inner-ring and any sprocket smaller than about the 15. These are NOT studs to prevent a dropped chain slipping between the crank arm and the chainring - there are 6/7 of them around the chainring. While I try to avoid the 36/11 combination, I need to be able to get the 13, 14, 15 at least without the chain catching - it cant be good for it, long-term.

I'm of a mind to drill them out, which will leave me with a few extra holes in the chainring - but folks might begin to think I've got weight-weenie disease.
See pics attached. The first is taken from the drive side, the second from the non-drive side and while the pic is out of focus you can just about make out that the stud is oily from the chain catching on it.

Disappointed. Thought this was going to be about an all male 'cycling' themed stripper's group :(

The studs are there to help the chain ramp up to the big ring. I had this problem as well when running 52/36 chainrings but only on the bottom 2 sprockets. After a while I just got used to changing up to the big ring earlier.
Don't drill them out as the front shifting will suffer.
