Moving to Tullow

    Hi,

My wife and I are thinking of relocating from Dublin to Tullow.
2 reasons mainly - one being a change of pace of life as my wife suffers from an arthritis related illness which can cause depression and feels that a move away from stresses and strains in Dublin would be beneficial. The 2nd being financial, as my wife can no longer work and this would enable us to pay off a large chunk of our mortgage.

I luckily have work but would commute to Red Cow area in Dublin daily. How long is the commute and is motorway or N81 best?

We have heard good things about Tullow and am hoping people on here can give me a feel for what it is like to live in, shopping, doctor/medical services, eating out, socialising etc.

We saw there was a previous thread (2010) re Tullow but are not interested in people telling us it is full of louts, drunks and junkies. Most small towns in Ireland or urban areas of larger towns/cities will have their local louts and drunks etc. You just have to know how and when to avoid them. We are from Dublin after all ;) !!!!

Thanks in advance for any info :)

We live in Tullow . It's a small town and for many services Carlow may your first port of call. There's a Supervalu, Tesco Aldi and Lidl in the town There's a good Indian, Mount Wolsely hotel has a good leisure centre and is good for bar food . Rathwood is a few miles outside the town and is nice for lunch and a browse about. Are you thinking of a particular area if the town?

    Hi byhook...,

We haven't looked anywhere specific yet. I am taking a couple of days off (Fri & Mon) and we hope to organise a couple of viewings. I did notice that there were a couple of houses for sale in the grounds of Mount Wolsley, which I thought looked ok and the proximity to the leisure centre would suit us both as I use a gym (infrequently) but my wife gets benefit from aqua aerobics.

There seem to be many houses around the town and outlying areas some of which look very nice but also we dont want to move to an unfinished celtic tiger type estate.

We are both quiet type people but would hoipe to be able to integrate into the local community and make it a home.

I play golf in mount wolseley and live in rathvilly (about 7 miles away), the houses on the grounds of mount wolseley are lovely but be aware that are large number of these were bought as investment properties and are rented out as holiday homes meaning you don't get to know your neighbours. The houses across the road are very nice also. I think the estate is called Aaron wood. Tullow itself is a nice town with a decent nightlife, there are some nice friendly pubs also

I did see adverts for the holiday homes alright and wonder whteher they might be the same. If the houses were empty most of the year it would of course be a factor.
Thanks for the name of the estate accross the road we will have a look on Friday. Rathvilly is also somewhere we have looked at.

A visit this wek will give us a better idea I suppose as i would like to see the town on a weeekday and see whats going as we have only previously been down on a Sunday.

There is a 4 bed detached house for sale in Rathsillan estate (where we live), this is a very quiet estate and they are very well built (Picsaw ltd was a local builder).

Tullow is a great place to live and as byhook said we are well serviced.

Not to take away from Tullow but Ballon has good community spirit and is handy to the M9 motorway . Tullow does have a health centre and a Garda barracks.

    M9/M7 Motorway is far better.
I can make the red cow in about 45 minutes from exit 5 (N80) so about 35 minutes from exit 4 (Castledermot)
Tullow to Castledermot is probably about 20 minutes.

I moved from Dublin to Ballon 8 years ago and I could not be happier. It has a great community spirit (www.ballonvillage.com) and I think it is rare these days that non-locals can live somewhere and within that time I cannot move far within the village and I get talking to somebody about this and that as if I am a local. I lived in Lucan for 3 yrs and did not even know my neighbours name! There is a good mix of ages and activities for everyone in the village.

In terms of services , Tullow is well serviced but is only 10 minutes away. I can reach the M9 in 10 mins and then you are looking at 35minutes to the Red Cow with moving traffic all the way up.

I will never move back to Dublin , I wake up everymorning and open my curtains to this view...

That is a great view alright and thanks for the info re the travel. It would be worth the journey for a view like that.

I realised last night that i probably should have just said moving to Carlow. We are not averse to looking anywhere with maybe the exception of Carlow town itself.

We had a marriage blessing in Bagenalstown and our reception in The Lord Bagenal (back when it was smaller) so Carlow has always had a preference from us.

It just happened that Tullow seemed to tick some of the boxes as we are now.

We are driving to Tullow on Friday and I hope to spend the day in Carlow so will have a look at Ballon and other spots too. Thanks.

    Amango,

Friday I'm suppose to be off day so most probably I'll be at home, so if you want to meet up to give you an insight about Tullow let me know via private message.

Good luck with your house hunting

Not sure if I would like to commute to Dublin via the N81, I know people do it but it's the sort of road, which whilst scenic, isn't over endowed with safe passing places. There are a good scattering but you can't always overtake on them and frustration can creep in. Hence you'll see people taking chances fairly often and you don't get away with that forever. Unfortunately the same is true of the road from Tullow to Castledermot. Once you pass Castledermot you're basically on old main road or motorway to Dublin. It really depends on your frame of mind, I suppose if you wanted variety you could go one way and come back the other. But just be prepared to be patient...

Thanks Zeppi, that is a very generous offer. Tomorrow is basically a recon day but if we like what we see and feel good then I will definitely be in touch :-) it would be good to get a personal view.

I think myself it might have to be the motorway certainly for getting to work. The n81 is closer to my mothers so would probably use that for coming home some evenings.

I commute via the N81 daily . I couldn't hack refilling at the garage more than once a week and bloody Rubberneckers on the motorway. the speed camera vans are on the N81 at least twice a week.

That m9/m7 junction used to kill me also, I know they have changed that exit layout but I have not gone that way in months

I would only travel on the Motorway if it bad weather as you are guaranteed at least one lane will be gritted ... the part of the the N81 between Rathvilly and Baltinglass is more often that not gritted.

To all of you who were so helpful with your advice, thank you so much. We have (finally) decided to move to Tullow. We visited on a good few occasions, wandered round the town a good bit looking at facilities etc and we are happy to move.

In terms of location we are looking at purchasing a house within the grounds of Mount Wolseley. They seem to be good value and on enquiry re the holiday home aspect it seems that Mount Wolseley are looking at selling them as residential homes. There is a planning application in with Carlow CoCo to change their use from holiday homes to residential use.
The section 23 tax breaks are finishing and they have more than enough rental homes to cover demand so they don't want to have the expense of looking after them. There are some sold and occupied as residential already.
We also discovered that there is a qualified physio at the leisure centre which will be of huge benefit to my wife.

So thank you all for your help and observations which have helped and maybe see some of you in town for a pint someday soon :)

Did you purchase a house in Mount Wolseley after?

I hear they are lovely finish inside. Ive seen some go for €112,450 recently that seems like great value for such a big house on a Golf Course. It Amazing up around there really well maintained with a kids playground and all. What is it like to live in?
