    Hi everyone,

I was sunbathing last week and found this yoke on my blanket. It wasn't particularly big but as you'll see, the pattern on its back is creepy enough to remind me of this guy...

Any ideas on what it actually is?

    Thanks in advance,

    Niamh

    Hi,
Check out the the following link:

    http://www.gardenofireland.com/false_widow.phpi

I think it looks like a False Widow spider - Steatoda nobilis. It's an invasive species that bites!

Should have attached the image below in the last post.

This is Steatoda nobilis and I think it looks quite similar to the spider in the pic which you sent.

    Hi Kicking Bird,

Thanks a lot for your response. It does look like it could be a False Widow alright. Glad to see there is a dailymail article about them!

One of my pals has also suggested it could be a mothercare spider such as here 5219382070

    Hi La_Gordy,

It's nice to hear from you!The image you posted of the Mothercare spider hasn't uploaded, but have seen some images myself and although you can see somewhat of a similarity,I'd still be confident it's Steatoda nobilis. The Mothercare spider - Theridian sisyphium, has a more rounded abdomen and would appear to have longer legs. The pattern on the back of Steatoda nobilis is quite distinctive and think your original images and the image I sent show this quite clearly.

Yeah,I was looking at that Daily Mail article earlier and guess she was extremely unlucky or lucky(whichever way you want to look at it!).I don't think everyone who gets bitten suffers in such a manner;I suppose it's just like those who are allergic to wasp and bee stings.

I'm sure someone else out there may have an opinion on what our wee friend is,so let's see!

    All the best.
