So I was with my granny at lunch time.

    Came across my old bike.

Was thinking of restoring it for my son. Bike is at least 25 years old and has gone through I'd say 10 childhoods. One more wouldnt hurt.

Is it worth restoring? Where would I start?

spd sl pedals, a set of compag zonda wheels, and a set of di2 and it'd be good to go..:)

if you stripped the components, got it sandblasted and powder-coated it'd clean it right up, might be overkill for hat you want it for though

I think the DI2 might be over kill!

Only reason I'm interested in doing anything to it is because it is mine. I'm sure it would be cheaper to buy a new bike

What's wrong with it? A clean and lube of drivetrain, wheel hubs, good brake etc and good to go?

i just got hold of my fathers old bike for the very same reason. it's going to cost more than it's worth, far more, but sometimes it's not the real value you have to put on them, but the emotional one.

it's a high nelly, probably 55 to 60 years old. needs a fair bit of work, the sand blasting/powder coating i mentioned above is the first step

Do it. My mam did this for me with an uncle's old bike and again with an aunt's old bike for my sister.

She knew next to nothing about bikes but did a great job with some sandpaper, WD40 and spray-paint.

I wanted to do a restoration for my girlfriend but just didn't have the space or time to do it, I'm sure it'd be great fun.

There is a guy in Limerick who sells all the parts, he's online to if you need any bits.
Who love to do it up and do the ring or similar on my father's bike

I fixed up a 15 year old BMX passed down from my nephew a while back. New tyres, brake blocks and cables, cleaned and re-greased wheel bearings, degreased and re-lubed chain, wire brushed, and let the kids add some decals. The bike has since been through both of my daughters, and has recently been passed on to another nephew. Seems to be pretty much bomb proof.

CRC had good prices on small tyres for kids bikes, about €10 each AFAIR, and that was the most expensive bit. Great craic doing the bike up with the older daughter, damn shame they've since taken the BMX track out of Marlay which the kids loved. Hand me down and 2nd hand bikes are the beano, doing them up gives you a far better sense of ownership than buying new.
