World Youth Day and SIM cards

Hi guys, new here and looking for some advice, hope that's okay. I'm fortunate enough to be heading off to Brazil for World Youth Day next weekend, and I'm having trouble finding a phone solution. I don't want to use my normal provider, as the roaming charges in South America are insane. I was planning on getting a Brazilian SIM when I arrived, but apparently it's really hard for non-locals to get hold of one. I was about to give up entirely when a friend suggested a company called Telestial which sells sim cards for international travel.

These Telestial guys are based in the US, but after a bit of research, I found several other companies in the UK, such as ekit, Maxroam and GOSIM. I was just wondering whether anyone had used one of these before. My friend says she found her one invaluable when she was at WYD Madrid a few years ago, but I was hoping for some feedback closer to home. At the very least I'd like to be able to contact my friend who will also be in Rio and buy her a drink!

Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks, and god bless!

Don't know about sim cards and roaming charges but if you can access wifi could you use skype for calls and cabbage for texts?
