Click on Chainset

    Hi there,

A year ago I got a bike built for me which consists of a Litespeed frame, Mavic Askium wheels and a 10 speed Shimano Tiagra Groupset.

Unbeknown to me about 2 months ago the chainset came loose. I brought my bike back to the shop and they tightened the bottom bracket. A couple of days later I was cycling to work and the chainset actually came loose and came off the frame altogether. I was disgusted and brought the bike back and I heard one of the mechanics saying that a plastic washer that holds the chainset together was not put on after the previous repair. I was disgusted. The funny thing is that I didn't get an apology from the owner of the shop. Needless to say that was the last time I was back in the shop. I started to get a click every time I completed a revolution in the chainset and it happens in the same place every time but the funny thing is that it does not happen when it is raining!! I brought my bike to my local shop and he told me that my chain had stretched (not related to the click) and the bottom bracket had come loose again. He replaced the chain, BB and cassette. However the click is still there. I am wondering could I have damaged the chainset when it came off? I am looking to upgrade it to a Sram Force chainset in the near future.

    Anybody's help is greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks, Mark.

A complete shot in the dark here, but I've had a similar annoying click on two different bikes and in both cases it was frame related despite my thinking it was the bottom bracket or something similar. The first time it was a piece of grit stuck between the seat-post and frame which clicked with every pedal rotation and the second time it was a loose bottle cage nut (I'm sure there's a technical term for it). Drove me nuts trying to find both of them but trial and error playing around with all possible moving and static parts might be the best bet.

when you spin the pedals without loading them does it click? if its only with a load, it may be worn bearings in the BB? ament sure from your post if they replaced the BB or not.

Check the pedals (swap them out if you can). I started getting a clicking noise after I 'upgraded' to new pedals. Swapped them back to the old ones this morning and the click is gone.

Thanks guys. It doesn't click so and when I spin them on their own although I did get the bottom bracket replaced so I do not think it is that. I will take the seatpost out and give it a clean and I have a spare set of pedals there so I will also change them. Other than this it is driving me bonkers.

Thanks again for taking the time to post.

You need to eliminate causes one by one. I currently have an intermittent click that's my shoelace hitting the frame.

You'd be amazed what can cause it. Don't spend any more money until you've eliminated everything you can.

Bud, thank you very much. This was the problem. I changed the pedals to the ones I had lying there and cycled to and from work today (20 km each way) and not one click......and thanks to the other guys too.....
