Hey guys im considering buying a 2001-2003 ford mondeo :) But im not sure weather to buy a 1.8 petrol or the 2.0 litre diesel. I've got insurance quotes for both and they're similar and the diesel's tax is only slightly more expensive. My question is which would be cheaper over the course of the year with fuel costs? I'll be doing three or four small journeys a week then one 60 km trip. So any ideas which would work cheaper?
    Thanks! :)

I'd be very wary of a petrol one of that age. Most of them are on their last legs now. That 1.8 petrol engine wasn't a great unit to say the least.

Petrol. Not an lx. Low mileage

I had the 1.8 petrol and i never had an ounce of bother with the engine there was 140000 on the clock by the time i sold it on to my sisters partner who after a year of owning it still has had no bothers with it.

I have had 2 mondy's.... both diesel. Super cars, imho.

Couple of points. I find the car is a very good motor, but can be heavy on diesel. I am lucky to get 42mpg overall which includes 45 miles M9 per day and and 40 miles other roads per day. Also both my cars - estates - have been very heavy on front tyres.

If getting a diesel be sure it is the TDDI version as the TDCI can be regarded as troublesome by the trade.

Go for Zetec spec minimum as it has all the bells & whistles.

I think they changed the petrol engines in these in late 2003. Prior to that they also suffered from the butterfly valve issue in the manifold which can be fatal to the engine.

I'd imagine a 10 to 12 year old diesel Mondeo will have been to the moon and back at this stage. 90bhp TDDi engine is noisy and crude but tend to go forever once they get a regular oil change.

Yours is the exception, believe me. They are not a good engine.

Yeah maybe mine was an exception altho i did look after it the best of stuff went into it when needed and it got a regular oil change and service.

I am surprised to hear that they are not a good engine as I have never heard a guard say a bad word about the mondeos and they have 300 K on the clock when they get taken out of service.

Are the guards ones not usually 2.0?
