Eircom eFibre feedback

    Hi!

Soo, here in Dundalk center eFibre by Eircom will be Jul-Sept 2013... Before my dad jumps into contracts and maybe regrets I want to know from users who has it - how is it in quality wise and of course in speed terms post speedtest image from towns local speedtest.net servers just for aknowledge :) and if it is really how it stated

Currently for many years my dad here has 'Smart' DSL.... Its quality is somewhat good BUT speed is outdated and slow for year 2013, especially in evenings when it's getting 'crowded' on the line! And then we only can dream about skype calls, so im not even mentioning about video chat...
I have read very bad customer reviews about Eircoms support and its broadband quality, but its was all about DSL and satellite internet.
So basicly will it be worth it to jump over to them when it will be available here in woodville manor, Dundalk? Looking on 'eFibre Unlimited' thats up to 50mb... And is it really that 'you' are on your own line? and nobody else.. because it's hard to imagine it here in Ireland :D

    Current connection:

Speed and ping can be down'd because of old ~10yo laptop.. but nice upgrade is coming soon for my dad! :)

    Thanks for the reply's!

It's def worth the jump to fibre when it becomes available it won't be here where i live until 2014 sadly but still good to be getting it than not i guess..

If i could jump to fibre today i would anything to ditch my current connection with 3Ireland ,from looking at the speedtest thread people on Eircom fibre and Vodafone fiber all seem to be getting the exact speeds they are paying for i would say it's totally worth it .

Hopefully another user who has the service can shed more light on this though :)

Yeah you should make the switch one way or another. At least you've the option too. A lot of people don't and some even have it worse - they have Digiweb with their laughably low 30 day rolling monthly bandwidth limits (100GB hahaha)

Actually I've been with at least 7 different ISPs (not UPC or magnet tho), and Smart is by far the most stable and responsive ISP for gamer. I've even managed to stream on twitch at 480p (game) and 720p (desktop) on 0.7Mbps, leaving 0.1Mbps for the game and it does its job amazingly well. So the same goes for skype or Teamspeak, quality is very good, i'd blame your laptop, mate.

However, I am more than happy to switch to fibre, particulary interested in upload speeds for 1080p streaming, bought FX-8350 especially for real time x264 encoding.

Oh and Smart keeps updating their speeds and caps, but never notifies their current customers. The reason is kind of obvious, but either way, upgrade is free and takes about 2 days to be active. I am currently getting solid 1.8-2.0MBps speed on steam, I guess you missed out on that free upgrade. Also my connection is same day or night. I think you should call them and ask for it while waiting for eFibre.

Smart is owned by Digiweb, but SmartBB have 350GB limit. It is more than enough for streaming movies 24/7, but I somehow manage to hit that cap too easy, anyway.

Here in dundalk myself (lennonstown manor) had a eircom tech in my house last week to fix my line.
He said he was just after coming from the exchange and he reckons it will be sometime in august when efibre is available. Not long away i suppose :D

Can't wait! Its timed perfectly with me getting a PS4 so hopefully I can stream games once that becomes available too!

:D Yes, I allready saw that last year... My dad was paying smarts old bill 39Eur for 'up to 15mb' speed and 150gb cap... Called them and switched 'up to 24mb' with 350gb cap for 29eur, not using home phone :) also last year eircom switched my home Phone line thing.. where you connect the line at home there something was dead inside and I had very poor line quality(borrowed from friend home phone to test) so eircom replaced that and broadband speed was like it should... previously i could get max maybe 5megs.. Now is like it should be.
One thing i have noticed over years is that speed drops in like 6mo when compared at start and when i ring up to smart, they do something and speed is like it should be in speedtest(~20megs) again now its under 10megs so i think soon i need to call them because on my newly sony laptop that i've brought with me so I could watch HD series that I like also is the same speed :D

:D Srsly no one here has this eFibre so can write a feedback how is it?... But I hope that this option will finally be a speed breakthrough here in Ireland!

:) ... @ home country I have also unlimited fibre at my house for ~5years now...
    2007755121.png
 I very much hope that Ireland will reach fibre speeds like this soon! ..And im paying for this speed + InteractiveTV 26Latvian lats/month(~36Eur/month) :D

Yea I am familiar with LV speeds i'm from Alūksne myself :), Lattelecom there is like Eircom here, really hope to see IE catch up to them, but I guess there are some limits with underwater pipes stretching between islands.

Here's few tests guys are doing with vDSL, since it's a wholesale, Vodafone is selling same service, little cheaper, but with caps introduced. Correct me if wrong, but I think Digiweb is selling VDSL, too, but very expensive. It's quite confusing and shame they are calling VDSL a fibre (it still uses copper cables heavily), same as midband a broadband... plus all the "unlimited data" with introduced fair usage policies, throttling and actual usage caps right after "unlimited", quite unprofessional, but not against the law.
    shot_130717_181939.jpg
The definition of "unlimited" apparently has nothing to do with "infinity" anymore

So far I am reading that Eircom is the only one with true unlimited usage and no caps or throttling, which is amazing news for me.

    rant over :P

I got eircom 50mb fiber installed 3 days ago have to say I'm loving it, running on an almost legacy PC and hitting almost exactly what is stated as the speed 3222384082.png

I went for the 70 megabyte Unlimited but getting around the same as yourself

Just got efibre, also in Dundalk, two days ago, with the unlimited 50mb package I think along with that eVision thing because our Saorview box was a piece of ****e.

Only getting about 15mb/s down and 5 mb/s up. Apparently we're far away from the hub server thing but The nearest one is 500m away and another 1.5km away,at the most,if my memory of it's position serves me right.

Kind of feeling conned now,but still better than the previous speeds with digiweb shared line of 6-8 on a good day when some eejit wasn't streaming porn all the time. Price is the same too.

Isn't the whole bloody point of fibre optic to not lose speed over distance?

Guess some more unpleasant conversations on the phone then.

Sort of. It is true that fiber is not affected by electric resistance, but even optics has their limits, including distance.
Either way, your problem is not the fiber optic - because it ends at the box, it's the copper cable that connects your home to that fibre box. You can't measure distance to box just by using google maps, cable is most likely making a big loop before it reaches you thus degrading the quality.

Your best bet is probably to wait till they rolls out vectoring, it will greatly reduce signal to noise ratio boosting your speeds a little bit, but don't expect miracles.

I am not completely sure on this, but I think UPC is the only one providing fibre directly to home... but don't think Dundalk will ever get it.

Ah, I see now. Cheers for the reply. It's defiantly due to the fact that we are stuck with our usual crap line. Kind of negates the point of fibre, don't you think, but whatever. Should be happy with what I have, and stability is far better than with digiweb.

Hi, I got it a few weeks. Was brilliant up until the weekend when it went from 35 - 40 right down to 20Mbs. Ecom are now saying that my line cannot handle anymore than that... I may each more than half of what Im paying intermittently. Offered to pay upto the amount I was being charged which didnt go down well.

Sorry to bump this. Any more recent feedback?

Outskirts of South West Dublin here and can't get UPC.

I'm about to try out EircomFibre, the unlimited one that's advertised up to 100MB. The line passes OK on the test.

Currently with VF and last night was the final straw: Trying to upload photos and videos and getting 1 MB down and 0.7 up which is a common occurrence.

Looking at some of the speeds mentioned here: even if I got 15/5, It'd be a big improvement and if I got 47/15, I'd be turning cartwheels. .

    Thanks.

Call Eircom, Vodafone or Sky and they will tell you pretty closely what speed you are likely to get on eFibre (if it is actually available on your line).

    Go Here
    https://www.eircom.net/broadband/
Click on the Buy Now button on the right.
It should ask you to put in your phone number (or alternatively your address)
It will check a database and there should be an option
"Discover the maximum speed you will experience in your home"

Lay out of page may change again, but that is the general idea.

Thanks lads. It's saying i'l get a maximum of 90MB but I was just wondering just how much the sales patter measures up to the actuality. Suppose I'll find out anyway. :)

That's the line speed you'll get - but obviously don't test using wifi - use a wired connection.
