Hey, I was looking to upgrade quite a while back but budgetary constraints held me back. Will be looking to make my purchase in the next month.

I'm looking for a machine that will be intensive with video encoding. I want something that will render to great speeds, and will also ft my budget.

    1. What is your budget? €1000

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Video Editing/Graphic Compositing/3D Compositing/Gaming

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes (this can be excluded form budget however)

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

    5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

5a. If yes, what size do you need. Ideally 27" but a 22" would be grand.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? I will sort out my own peripherals, however an editing friendly mouse would make a great rcommendation if anyone knows of one?

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? I may, but I'm relying on the base speed of processor and GFX card

    8. How can you pay? Credit Card & Bank transfer
    9. When are you purchasing? Roughly 20-30 days

I'm looking for a mobo that would support Firewire 800 also. My HDs are all configured to this, so it will be a necessity. If this can be made for less than 1000 then work away the cheaper the better :)

    Thanks again.

A bit over budget but there's a lot of power there. The xeon is pretty much the same as an i7 3770 just running 100mhz slower and without the igp. Got a 120gb ssd for your os and programs and maybe a scratch disk depending on what size it needs to be. 2 x 1tb drives for importing/exporting. The 660gtx is a good mid range card for gaming and supports most video editing programs gpu acceleration options.

You can get a retail copy of windows from HWVS for €89 (make sure it's english if you add it) or you can get an oem copy of W7 from here for €44.

If you want to save €18 you can drop the after market cpu cooler. It's only there to reduce temps and noise of the stock cooler.

You can get the case in 2 other colors as well.

You can upgrade the monitor to the 24" version for €30 more.

-edit- Not sure what makes a good video editing mouse, the one listed is a decent budget option but there are better ones if you want to spend more. Maybe add a nice mouse mat as well for smoother easier movement. Something like this. I completely missed the comment about the firewire 800 so I'll have to get back to you on that. It should make 0 difference for hdd's as their max speed is far lower than even sata 300's bandwidth.

Wow! Thanks Bloodbath, super informative post. I've bashed a few baskets together over the past couple of weeks, but I wanted some more assurance on the new processors vs Ivybridge. I was considering the i5 3570k, but if the Xeon provides a faster processing speed then I'm game :)

Not too fussed about the mouse, I'm more of a comfy keyboard kind of guy. Working with a lot of shortcuts and key strokes. Once the mouse is bearable I'm happy. Most gaming needs will be done on a controller, only play soccer sims and platformers.

I was looking at the 7620 because of the extra CUDA cores and bandwidth speed, but the 660 should address everything I need to do. Most of my work is encode based, so the processor will cover that. I'll be working with motion graphics but most 3D rendering will be mostly practice for the time being.

Regarding FW 800. I'll probably pick up a separate interface. I think that USB 3 should cover some good speeds and for the beginning I'll have my scratch disks on an internal HD with a dual partition. Btw, extremely shocked at the price of the SSD they've come down by about 30% - 40% in the past year. Great value. Might look at purchasing a second one for a second OS, have been considering the Hackintosh route.

The budget is ideal. I wanted to undershoot it by about €200, see if I could adjust the processor. My concoction of baskets were pricing in at about €1300. So this looks like a super build.

Thanks again for this, it looks like quite the build - really looking forward to encoding my first hour long video. Current system takes 2-3 hours to encode just 4 minutes of footage with no effects or enhancements.

    No problem man.

The xeons 8 threads will give you far more performance for your work than an overclocked 3570k for the same price.

If you need a keyboard go to amazon as the German layout is different.

You could go for the 250gb samsung 840 for an extra €65 and partition it for multiple os's. It would have faster speeds and longer durability than the 120gb. You could even get away with doing that on a single 120gb with proper file management. There are lots of ways of saving ssd space like disabling hibernation mode, reducing the page file size, moving the windows downloads folder to a hdd, moving the system restore points to a hdd ect.
