I just bought a Pal N64 and it just got delivered. It comes with an RF thingie so trying to figure out how to tune my lcd to have a quick play and see if it's working.

I'm also after buying a SNES and it's been modified to play at 60hz and NTSC games. Just waiting on that to arrive.

Is there any similar mods possible for the N64, I've heard the NTSC 64 can use a proper RGB but is there anything that can be modded or purchased to give a better picture quality.

Also while on the subject, anybody got any definitive list of 64 games which should be purchased?
007, Perfect Dark, Banjo, ISS any others?

I personally like Donkey Kong 64 but I don't think others did!

I think you need the expansion pack with Perfect Dark (slots in the front)

Both Zeldas. I think it was the first Zelda I ever actually cared for the characters (and was scared by Ganondorf... I was a teen)

Turns out you need the expansion pack for perfect dark and majoras mask but it came with dk64

Jet Force Gemini is a great N64 game, Space Station Silicon Valley is another, try to get the Pokemon Stadium games if you can. Lylat Wars is great. The Mario Party games are amazing fun. Body Harvest is fun and should be cheap. Super Smash Bros is pricey but worth it.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, it's UHF channel 36 (594 MHz).
The convention was for all RF modulators in devices such as home computers and games consoles, tv tuner boxes and VCRs to use this channel, and broadcasters usually avoided broadcasting on or adjacent to this channel.

Got a couple of modded snes, they're awesome. Maybe you should look into getting a crt tv for older systems, new TV's can't produce the same picture quality. snes rgb cable is a must too

I'd throw out or burn the RF cables you have. Get a SNES RGB cable. The PAL N64 is a terrible machine. It doesn't support RGB and there's no way to mod it to 60Hz. You can only mod a NTSC N64 for RGB and only older models. If you are serious about collecting I'd sell it and get an american model.

If you do keep it then the best quality video cable you can get is the modified s-video cables from http://www.consolegoods.co.uk/ or their ebay store. They need to be specially modded to work with a PAL N64 and they are the only place that does them.

I wouldn't really bother with Goldeneye or Perfect Dark. They are products of their times and are near unplayable now. Same with Conkers Bad Fur Day. It's not funny at all unless you are under the age of 15 and like fart jokes.

Make sure you pick up Blast Corp, it's Rare's best game on the system. Starfox 64 is a must as well.

I cam across this link to build a new RGB DAC for PAL consoles http://members.optusnet.com.au/eviltim/n64rgb/n64rgb.html

Might be a little ott and be easier to just buy an NTSC machine. Think I'll go with that option. Then at least I'll have a few spare parts and I can make use of the shell. Mini media centre maybe hmmmm

I have an expansion pack so DK and Perfect dark should be good to go.

I will have to get 007, yeah I know it looks terrible but there is some great mods out there for it so might have to get an everdrive to play those. Finally see that hidden island up close.

Not worth the hassle as the games will still run in 50Hz, as Retr0 said, get the PAL modified Svideo cable from consolegoods, or better yet, an NTSC N64 & buy the NTSC Svideo cable from the same supplier.

Get an RGB cable for your Snes from consolegoods too, & if you have a spare €20/€30, pick up a crt tv & treat yourself to a real retro experience. The picture is far better & smooth than on the newer flat panel tv's for these old systems

I might go with one of the early french PAL machines already modded, it works the same as the NTSC ones. It means not having to buy new NTSC games. About €100 on eBay. I'll wait a while as I just spunked €400 on all of this, my wife won't understand :D

The modified svideo pal cables are very close to RGB quality, I've a US N64 & after seeing the picture via svideo I'm happy not to bother modding it. There's no real point in buying a PAL N64 for that price, just for RGB, not while the modified svideo cable gets you 95% of the way there.

The money would be better spent on a US console. I know the games won't work, but you can sell off your pal games & rebuy them in ntsc. I done that with the Snes a while back, I actually made money doing it as the US games are cheaper

Yeah you'll actually save money in the long run buying NTSC rather than PAL games since they are cheaper. They play far better on the US system due to the increase in speed. Most N64 games suffer from bad framerte problems so the increase in playability is even more pronounced on a US N64 than with other US consoles.
