Is there any fertilizer that will do better than others in this type of weather?
I must order some but i can't use any more p. I don't want to use can cause i believe it just sits on top of the ground for weeks in this kind of weather.
So what are yee ordering/spreading if any?

Im using CAN on any ground that has some bit of a green cover on it will fly when rain comes. Dont think much point putting out on burnt ground maybe other lads disagree

How much N have you spread to date? This is the question. We have 250 units out and will not spread till rain forecast as we would have a lot if background N available.
If you have little spread I would go with CAN+ S in the evening and on the whole farm together

I've around 170 out till now so i can spread more N. Its been all pasture sward till now so i need to watch the P. Suppose the CAN+S is the one to go for. Whats 19-0-15 like? Would i be putting out way too much K if i went with bag and a half to the acre?

I was speaking to a neighbour who does a lot of tillage about the CAN+S a few weeks ago. He is very clued into the science of crop growth, fertilser utilisation/timing etc. He told me to forget about the CAN+S until next spring. Late April and May is when the plants need the sulphur and will utilise it most efficiently. I think from listening to him it doesn't hang around in the soil for too long and is best applied when the demand is there.

Funny that because from what I've read it's recommended for 2nd cut. Tillage boys are much more clued into soil fertility though.

i have a load of CAN sitting in the yard, I need to get it out on some ground for second cut silage, was going to spread some evening and watery slurry on top of it, would this be a good idea, can wait till mid sept for second cut

Does the '2units of N a day' rule of thumb hold through for silage ground in this weather with grass under drought stress or is a heavy dew helping it along??

A good wilt will sort any fert problems out. On dry land second cut is dissappearing.

What's wrong with 85 units for second cut? Assuming he gives it 43 days or so to eat it all up.
Should it be less for second than for first cut?
If first cut was light, wouldn't make sense to go for broke with the second cut!
Just askin, cause I might have been a bit heavy for second cut myself:confused:

If it's any consolation I went with 3 bags of CAN+S. Plan to knock it next week and give it a good wilt.

If you're looking for a good home for your second cut drop me a PM ;)

If you go by the 2 units a day then 36 days which is the 28th of July.

I asked the teagasc advisor at the last BTAP meeting about the 2 units a day to see when I can cut. His opinion is that if the grass is growing well then it is using the 2 units but wilt for at least 24hrs for safety.

Talking to a vet i know a while back who is very up to date on stuff and in the conversation we were on about wilts taking the N out of crops but he said that you can get hay with high levels of N in it  so dont bank on the wilt sorting out all your problems..

How is it looking now JDI? I know you weren't too happy with it a few weeks ago. Mine could do with a drop of rain! I think I'I cut late next week too as need the aftergrass back asap!!

Yeah it's patchy but has bulked up. The week after that post it improved quite a bit. Quality starting to deteriorate so going to knock it sooner rather than later.
