Wife getting phd funding - will I lose my jobseekers allowance?

    Hi there,

I'm getting jobseeker's allowance for myself and my wife as my dependent. Also getting rent supplement. She has been studying full-time and has just been approved for phd funding (around 16000 per year). I'm just wondering how this will affect my jobseekers allowance. Her payment will not be regular (i think they give a lump sum in 3 parts during the year - not sure about that). Would I lose my jobseekers because of her income or would it even count as income considering it's not a regular income if you know what I mean (i.e. not weekly/monthly)? She was getting a maintenance grant of around 3000 while doing a masters and that didn't affect my payments at the time.

    Thanks for help.

Not 100% regarding your particular situation, but my partner's monthly PhD stipend was taken into account when I applied for JSA. They had a threshold amount for total household income and unfortunately the amount he got per month was over the threshold - your wife's might be below it (partner was on 18k stipend). He was paid monthly but I remember we had to work out the weekly equivalent, so you might have to do the same regardless of the actual payment frequency. It's been a couple of years since I applied and the details may have changed so maybe asking the SW office will help
