Reporting clockers

A family member recently bought a new car and traded in his old one. After looking on their website they have clocked the traded in car and taken over 100,000km off the odometer. Rang them on Friday and asked about service history which they say they have. Even though none was provided to them with the car. Do I just go to any Garda station to report them? Does it take long until the Gardaí act on something like this or will the car be sold on to an unsuspecting buyer by that stage?

I'd be checking the car he bought first, make sure that's ok.

The garda may or may not be interested
But its a horrible thing for anyone to do
Plain and simple fraud. Interesting that they are able to conterfit service history.

in uk they do take this seriously and many a dealer has been caught.

Report it anyway give what proof you can to garda even if they don't follow up it will be recorded and if enough people compain they will be forsed to act in future.

Had thought it was clocked but managed to check the mileage on it from last September and it seems to be ok. Maybe they only clock the ones with really high numbers. It has a leak from the auto gearbox and the air con doesn't work but he doesn't want to deal with the dealer again.

He may want to deal with him after all as some of the faults are covered by warranty. Leak from gearbox sounds serious enough to go back to them.

I don't see any reason why you can't post a link to their Ad up here.
Maybe even a copy of the last NCT report showing mileage at that time.....

Surely that's against regs? I've had a thread deleted and received a warning before when I reported on an off license buying stolen alcohol, with arrests made and last year I posted a video of two scum bags attempting to steal a bike, which I stopped, and the video was deleted and I got a ban from the cycling forum. Posting where it was would leave boards open to a lawsuit or some BS.

He doesn't trust them to carry out the proper repairs.

Possibly, but if you were to simply post a link to the Ad and some proof that this car had a lot less mileage recently, then perhaps you could also mention that you weren't pointing any fingers....just alerting potential buyers to a clocked car.
Only a problem if you specifically accuse the Garage of clocking it themselves, maybe someone clocked it while out on a test drive...........

A call to the Consumers Association might be worth your while.
