    Hi

Would you recommend PayPal or Realex as a payment gatway for my website?

I was speaking with Realex and they recommended setting up 3D Secure. From what I gather, it's an extra level of security but it does require the customer to register their details.

Would you recommend 3D Secure? Does PayPal do 3D Secure?

    THanks

    hi there,

3D secure is a mechanism implemented by Visa and Mastercard to prevent credit card fraud. It basically asks you for a password at the moment of payment.

In the case where a fraudster manages to get your credit card details, he/she will not be able to use your card because the password is unknown.

My recommendation is to enable 3D secure with a reliable payment gateway, specially if you are dealing with online transactions. Regarding the vendors, I've dealt with Realex in the past and are really proffesionals. I believe 3D secure cannot be enabled by Paypal in Ireland (UK only).

Any questions, please feel free to ask.

    Regards
    Fabio

Have you considered Worldpay? I used them for my website but there are setup fees involved and you need a business account, I just preferred it to Paypal as transaction fees are much lower, plus there's no fiddling about with registering a new account.

    Stripe.com

Still in private beta in Ireland but if you email them and ask them for an invite you might be lucky and get to use it now.

You're mixing several things together here which is likely to cause confusion

1 - Paypal vs. merchant account

    2 - 3D secure

    Paypal vs merchant account:
Paypal is easy to setup BUT the fees are high and it doesn't do Laser.

Having your own merchant account gives you more control and you get the money faster than with Paypal.

3D secure - this is an extra layer of security that Visa and Mastercard have rolled out. It only comes into play when you're accepting payments by card ie. Paypal does not use it.
With 3D secure there's a shift in the liability which can help you as a merchant. However it creates an extra overhead for the buyer which can lead to a decrease in sales

With stripe you dont need a merchant account and have a payment gateway.
