Strange Phone Call from Sky!

I received a phone call from an 0044 number recently; the caller had an english accent and said they were "From Sky"

"I'm just calling to let you know that your Sky boxes are now out of warranty" he offered to renew my warranty for another 12 months at a monthly cost of approx £9, this would cover callouts and hardware repair/replacement for both my main box and any multi-room equipment, cables and dish, this seemed to be offered in the form of an insurance policy

I declined but then it got weird; he asked me to help him out, he was looking for the name of the racecourse were the Grand National is run every year, I suggested Googling it on the computer in front of him and he seemed to lose interest at that point

What is going on here? why the Aintree connection? Why would anybody want to by an extended warranty on a Sky box?

Sounds like a scam to me. Google and see if anyone else has complained of similar calls or email Sky and ask them if they do this normally. I doubt their staff ask random question about sporting events though;-)

Did a bit of Sky telesales myself, we used to call existing UK customers with special offers. On 50% of all calls most customers would say " oh god not that fraud insurance company again". Didnt realise it was after branching off into Ireland.

If you have call register on your phone, see can you find the details of the call. Then just Google the number. There are a number of companies who are either cold calling people or managed to get an illicit list of subscribers details from a former Sky employee.

Either way I gather they dont represent Sky, in which case report the call and the details (if you can get them off your phone) to Sky's legal Department.

You could always ask Sky did they pass on your details to a third party (which they couldnt do under Data Protection)

Ask them for their vat number or their company registration number to identify themselves. If they cant get something that easy within 20 seconds, hang up. Companies will always ask you to identify yourself so don't be afraid to do the same to them.
