    Hi,

My lower gear changes have been a bit notchy recently. But this morning selecting reverse was a problem. I had to crunch it into reverse. I had to do this twice, but once I got to work I tried again and it was fine. Does this sound like a grearbox or clutch on the way out?

Id check it for oil first.

    Do you clutch/grearbox/transmission oil.

I topped up the engine oil and the problem seems to be gone. Surely that can't be linked?

I've found the same problem when driving the car again Today, hard to get into reverse (crunching) and very notchy/slightly hard to get into forward gears too. Seemed to improve when the car warmed up. Anyone any ideas of probable causes?

I would think oil would at least make it better, Could be a linkage problem?

No no man gearbox oil, it probably has never been changed. Should be changed every couple of services by right.
Very rare in any car that its ever changed.

if it's the same as a 96 combo there's a small little pin with a small spring to hold it into the linkage just over the gearbox that when worn the gears can get hard to find,if you lift the bonnet and look at the linkage and move it your self or get some one to wobble the gear stick while you look at the linkage ,this might be your problem and it costs around 3 euro for a new one and can be changed in around 10 minutes.

Thanks, will take a look for this. I'd be pretty sure the gearbox oil was never changed.only went tot the dealer during the warranty and then to an indy since.I never seen this on any invoice.

Sorry for resurrecting this post again. Turned out the release bearing on my clutch was going, so the clutch was changed and the gearbox oil checked and topped up. But a few weeks on and my gear selection problem is back. It grinds into reverse gear most of the time and is difficult to select froward gears. What would the likely cause or causes be?

I had a similar problem with a mk4 golf, except mine went forward when I put it in reverse:o Some gears were also difficult to select etc, turned out to be the gear linkage.

What you're describing sounds more like a clutch problem though but would be best to bring it to a mechanic who could tell you for sure.

Thanks for that.I hope it's not the clutch, only new in a few weeks!

I'll get it checked to see.
