    Only if you stick it in their mouth. I've caught fairly big ones, up to 45lbs and they are harmless. You just have to watch your fingers while unhooking them. All tope should be returned to the sea unharmed.

    How big are they HC - Thresher sized???

    Sure most threshers grow to 4-6 metres long.
    Be lucky to get a tope of 7 foot.

    There has been threshers caught in Ireland though

    Thanx 4 that - I remember a big un being landed in North Mayo a few years back. Was in all the local papers.

    I caught 3 last year on a trip but were very small. Maybe 10-12 pounds at most.
    Reckon there are definately some big ones out there. Even though most people use mackerel for them the best part is apparently fresh water eel and flounder.
    And I was told that is the reason for them being caught close to shorelines near estuaries.
    Still hoping to get out this year and hook a big one :)
