Pembroke/Fishguard or Holyhead

Hello all. That time of year again. Flying to France on Wednesday for the hols and, as I have posted beforehand (ad nauseum) about presenting bikes at airport, this year I have given up arriving with the bikes with pedals removed, handlebars at 90 degrees etc etc (because of the hassle involved, particularly on return leg) so we shall pack them in cardboard boxes and discard them when we arrive. I shall be staying 2-3 weeks longer than my wife and because of the hassle we had in Lyons airport last year, I will be cycling back from Nice (we arrive in La Rochelle) to Caen and ferry to Portsmouth.
My question is, what is, in your learned opinions, my best option home? Portsmouth to Fishguard/Pembroke and cycle to Skerries from Rosslare, or brave the Welsh coastline to Holyhead to Dublin.
Please bear in mind I am touching 60 and am not a lover of peaks.
Anybody with any experience of either routes would be much appreciated.
If you are curious as to why I am not concerned about my wife flying from Nice airport, it's because she plays the damsel in distress card extremely well when on her own and hopes the staff will take pity on her.
    Many thanks for all contributions.

Thanks for the reply, Captain. Can I ask what route you took?
