Hole in exhaust. Should NCT test emissions anyway?

Was supposed to have a member of a club forum I am a member of (won't say which forum) view a car I am selling today. I bought the car to fix up and sell on, hopefully for a small profit for the labour put in. I told him that I would let the car go for €1050, which is at a small loss considering what has gone into the car. I had my eye on another project and so I offered the car at a knock down price. I told him everything that was needed and have an nct fail sheet to show what it failed on. Retest would be €28 and he could have fit the parts himself. I also have the parts the car needs (driver side steering rack and inner tie rod end), except for the centre section of exhaust, which has a small hole in it.

The NCT tester did not test the emissions because there was a hole in the exhaust. This is what I was told when collecting the fail sheet. The tester was a decent guy and took the time to show me where the problems were. He even pointed out that I had missed some corrosion at the rear, which needed to be treated.

So the guy coming to view the car has the cheek to pm me to say he wouldn't be coming to see the car (that part is fine). His reason; Well apparently I am being dishonest with him, because there is supposedly only 2 reasons the nct centre will not check emissions. #1 Oil Light. #2 EML. Personally I figured there would be more reasons (including a hole in the exhaust). So, just to satisfy my curiosity; If there is a hole in the exhaust, will the nct test the emissions anyway?

To note: The oil light and eml work just fine and turn off when the engine is started, as normal. However, the airbag light does need to be turned off, because my brother in law had the wheel off and when he put it back on, the srs light came on. I find it insulting that someone can make stupid accusations based on what a mate of a mate said

Hopefully the nct guy on here can confirm what I was told at the nct centre. If the emissions should have been tested, I will be right back onto them in the morning to find out why the emissions were not checked. I did wonder, because emissions are pretty much the first thing checked.

Unfortunately, similar to the way a worn joint will invalidate the alignment test, a hole in the exhaust will invalidate the emissions test as not all the emissions are being tested.

    Yep you're right.

A hole in the exhaust will be an N/A for emissions as they obviously wont be able to get a correct reading from the tail pipe if the emissions are escaping through a hole elswhere.

    Common sense.

Your man sounds likr an idiot. Dont even bother getting offended by his stupidity

Thanks. I have been a member of the club for 3 years and I wouldn't tarnish my reputation by selling anything without full disclosure. I'm not a wheeler dealer, or anything. I just love this particular type of car and want to see club members in good cars, because newbies are always asking about good examples.

In fairness, things like a 3 year reputation really should mean something. If that chap couldnt realise that then youre as well off not to sell it to him.

EML on is not even an NCT fail! Your man is completely wrong.

some testers don't test them if there's a hole in the exhaust as it will fail on lambda anyway but i test them because it has happened once or twice that a car comes back with exhaust sealed up and car fails on co or hc or both. Problem has been there since day 1 but only finding out at the retest. if the exhaust is badly leaking or broken i wouldnt test it though, but if its only a small hole, its unlikely it would affect co or hc readings.

Hi NCT TESTER. I am glad you seen this thread. I think my emissions may have been checked, as the car was in the first bay for a good 10 minutes now that I think about it.

If the emissions were tested and the hole was discovered after the emissions test, would this then show as N/A on the emissions?

it should say at the bottom of the sheet to retest emissions, exhaust leaking, if they were tested. are there readings on the emissions sections of the results or just zeros??

Was retested a few hours ago. She flew through the test and results are pretty good. It's now officially for sale.

That looks stunning. Always had a real soft spot for FTO's and their purring V6's

Seriously, would almost be tempted myself! :)

By the way, Is it 155k miles or kilometers??

Its actually 158k Kilometers. It needed a fair bit of work done, but she is a beauty alright.
