Is he the most unlikable character in any half decent sitcom?

I think HIMYM is decent, well watchable if not exactly groundbreaking

But my enjoyment of it is always negated by Ted. He's such a horrible self obsessed ego maniac that it makes it impossible to warm to hi

Stella is another horribly dis likable character too

He's not even the worst in that show. Lilly is the one I detest most.

I hate the mother. She's such a pain in the hole.

She's the most self opinionated character in a sitcom I have ever seen. She meddles in every single thing on HIMYM.

Lily is a hideous unlikeable shrew and Marshall deserves so much better. The messed up thing is that apparently Lily is considered out of Marshall's league and he's lucky to be with her! Ugh! Stupid Lily! I hate her so much!

I'm not mad on Robin any more either, her character went from being a cool girl to a pathetic mess.

Ted's just whiny and lame, always has been.

Barney's funny and all, but he's clearly evil and the way he treats women is appalling.

Marshall is the only character who is actually a genuinely nice, likeable person. Sometimes Lily drags him down though.

    You know who's great? Ranjit.

I actually think Barney is holding the show together. They are just cramming in more episodes to have them. Even Barney's jokes are getting a bit old. The captain is great though.

Whenever Lily wants something she always gets her way. Even if it's blatantly unfair, it'll be Marshall who is forced to agree to her demands and made to feel he's the unreasonable one. Still haven't gotten how he didn't dump her after she vanished for a few months suddenly to become an artists.

Yeah - the real reason he's taken so long to meet the mother is because he's an unlovable jerk. That's why I've felt compelled to wrote fan faction featuring him that don't give him much of a happy ending.

I gave up on the show quite some time ago. It started off well but quickly turned into the smuggest, most unlike able show on TV. Bar Marshall there's not a single character that's likeable and Ted is easily the most hateful character in the history of TV. An average episode of the show begins with Ted in the bar perving on younger women while telling Lily and Ribin about how hard life is. Then a flustered Marshall will appear and try to tell a story but his bitch wife will treat him life a child and talk down to him. As things are about to sunk into total mediocrity and hate filled spite Barney will appear with tales of wonderment that he wishes to share with his friends. Marshall will instantly jump at the opportunity but Ted will cry about his lack of love and how Barbney's plan is dangerous. Marshall and Barney will then disappear and sadly we have to spend the next 17 minutes listening to Ted, Lily and Robin talk about absolutely nothing of note. The episode will end with Marshall and BArney arriving back with amazing tales but they'll soon be silenced by Ted's crying.

I don't think characters have to be likeable to be interesting to watch.

To be honest, like every sitcom that outstays its welcome, the character's primary traits are amplified in order to keep them funny. It happened in Friends too, for example Ross became more and more neurotic, to the point where he was a parody of himself. HIMYM has been like this for a few seasons now.
