Have an apple tree out back and last year when I was cutting them up to make apple stew. One of them, which looked fine on the outside, contained a nest of earwigs. 10-15 of the little bastards scuttling every which way. Scared the crap out of me. So it could have been worse.

Nothing got to do with the manager. They don't open up fruit and inspect them.

    The heat probably ruined it.

It's fungus that got in there. In date or not, if you've the right conditions for it like heat and humidity it's going to speed up the decomposition process.

Meh, it won't do you any harm!
Earwigs are a good source of protein!

Unless the manager injected the apple with cobwebs.

OP, you could be on to something here. Expose this apple-buggering monster to save the rest of us

    Q. What's worse than finding a maggot in the apple you're eating?

    A. Finding half a maggot!

In this kind of heat, the temperature inside buildings can be way too warm to store fruit.

In France, we had a second small fridge which we kept on a warmer temperature than the normal fridge to store fruit and stuff like that. So it wouldn't be freezing cold but just wouldn't go off as fast as it would if you left it in the house.

Cheap enough investment - just a bog standard under-counter larder fridge (no freezer bit).

You're only trying to keep the stuff cooler not actually chilled.

Then just keep your meats, dairy etc in a normal fridge.

Probably not worth it though in Ireland given that this kind of weather's unusual.

For organic produce though (without pesticides) it might be worth looking into stuff like that though. Simple way of keeping the bugs down.

If in doubt, slice it the fruit before eating!

Well if you wouldn't mind answering just one more question.

If you buy 6 apples, you eat two and one is rotten. How many minutes does it take to get to Dublin from Limerick travelling at 100km/h?
