There's many of these so called illegitimate countries around the world. I've been reading of many in a recent book I picked up.

The most famous I'd imagine would be the Principality Of Sealand, a WW2 Naval sea fort which was commandeered by British Army General Paddy Roy Bates in 1967. The fort at the time was situated outside of British Territorial waters and they claim that they've been recognised de facto by the UK. In 1987 the UK extended their territorial waters but didn't interfere with Sealand. They have their own Constitution, Flag and anthem and they follow the British Common Law system. Also a currency the Sealandic Dollar.

They sell coins, postage stamps, Passports, Lordships and Ladyships and other titles of Nobility to raise funds, they also have hosted pirate radio stations in the past. Tourist bookings are also taken and they're plans for a Casino to open on the platform

Sports wise they field a football team, an associate member of NFB, the sanctioning body of FIFA for non recognised States.

Some of these so called Nations seem like the dreams of a madman, others's you'd kinda of half admire. It's an interesting topic.

Don't think Sealand is recognised as anything other than British terrotory populated by a group of fantacists. The only people who give these so called micronations any credence are the headbangers who populate them.

Didn't Limerick become a communist republic around 1920?

I think I read that somewhere

On my phone so can't link but there's a place I wanted to mention. It's an area between Egypt and Sudan called Bir Tawil. Basically, neither country wants it so it is without government and thus, without law. Look it up and see what you think. I wonder could you kill someone there and get away with it Scott free? It's an interesting anomaly.

This it? Simon Reeve has done a good documentary on it and others like it called "places that don't exist"

    I think it's on YouTube.

I don't see how that can be called a country or how people live on it.

I've seen houses bigger than Sealand

Yeah, the series is called "Holidays in the Danger Zone: Places that don't exist" and they're on Youtube. It covers places such as Transnistria, Somaliland and the Republic of China (Taiwan), but they aren't micronations, just breakaway regions or countries with limited international recognition.

Got to admire Bates and the whole Sealand thing, mad as hell but looks like a lot of fun and the family have gotten away with it for decades now. I do wonder if the whole platform will just fall into the sea some day though.

Trans Dniester - Moldova actually play their World Cup games there. Michael Palin visited it in one of his programmes.

Been to a few Micro nations myself - Jersey, Guernsey, Sark -which is part of Guernsey (they only go round by bike, horse or tractor), Aland islands, Malta, Andorra and I'm going to Gibraltar next month.

I had the chance to go to Nagorno-Karabakh but I had a flat rented in Yerevan and so we couldn't go. Its offically a war zone but safe to get to as the Azeris and Armenians stopped shooting at each other years ago.
