I should know this but what are the nicest most picturesque routes through the Slieve Blooms?

Ive done the cut both ways and the wolftrap from the Mountrath side. Are there any other notable routes or "climbs? My north Laois geography is lacking. Am I missing any good sights?

The Glendine is a savage climb... switchbacks et al!!

Park in Kinnitty Castle then head to Clonaslee which will give you a nice flat warm up of about 15km before The Cut, then do Glendine which is indeed quite savage, come back down Glendine the way you went up as the descent the other side is full of holes and gravel and you're just looking for trouble TBH. After that The Wolftrap and back to Kinnitty Castle for a well earned lunch.

I did exactly that recently. Garmin file to follow.

I've spoken to the management in The Castle and they don't mind you using the car park as long as you park around the side, just remember them when you're finished and buy a scone and a cup of coffee or something.

Thanks for that Glendine is the one I have missed! I will try some version of you route but might do it from Mountrath and cycle round the other way. The ridge of Capard seems to be another one too!

Ridge of Capard is a new one to me too, must look into it.

The Glendine is a great climb, with a section of about 300m at 20%. It's a lovely surface on the Laois side, but as soon as you get to the top, it's pretty much a gravel track until you're half way back to Kinnitty. There are three ways up to the Wolftrap - from Mountrath, Kinnitty, and from a crossroads about 5km up the Mountmellick road from Kinnitty. This has a few sections at 14% and the surface is a bit sketchy, but it's fine when you're going uphill.

Have investigated the Ridge of Capard by car. Its a steep one way climb but the view from the top is the most spectacular in the county!

Any chance of a garmin or mapmyride link for that?

I've been up there in the car as well, years ago, going to have to take the bike up there next time I go across to the Blooms.
