Looking to purchase my 1st road bike through the Work Cycle scheme ( am moving from using an MTB for a couple of years ). Have looked at a few models from different suppliers & am wondering has anybody had any experience with the Ridley Icarus? Have also looked at the Specialized Allez Elite. Both ( from my limited road bike experience ) look to have the Shimano Tiagra groupset & i cant see any major difference, bar a slight price difference.

Yeah don't know much about the bike but would be wary about using it in hot weather like we're having now. Prone to fall apart. Just make sure it's not too close to the sun and you'll be fine and remember always listen to your old man.

Ok worst joke ever but it's the best I can do with a limited vocabulary, sense of humour and intelligence ;-)

ah yes....flying too close to the sun & all that, will take it on board when parting with my hard earned cash

The Icarus is a good entry level bike, comfortable and well spec'd too. I have the Ridley compact which is the same spec bike but with triangular section tubing as opposed to round/oval on the Icarus. I think the overall geometry is fairly similar though. I test rode one before I bought mine and TBH couldn't tell much if a difference in it and the Compact. In the end up the only reason I went fir the compact was because it had the sharp edge tube design which I liked.

    CJC thanks,

have been quoted €1000 for the Icarus, which comes in slightly cheaper than the Specialized Allez Elite ( trying to save a few quid without cutting corners on quality of the bike )
