New Holland baler issues

Hi all, Ive a new holland 274 small square baler and while baling today the bales started to come out at different lengths.
It started off that the bales would be about 3 foot long and then every 5th one would be about a foot longer or so. Then over time all the bales started coming out at crazy lengths, some were 5 foot long. At first i thought the adjustment bar had slipped but it hadent. i ended up trying everything readjusting the stop on the length bar and even increased/ decresed the tensioners to no avail. Anyone any ideas

Not sure what NH use for the trapper to catch the knife but our IH was doing the same and I tracked the problem to a broken bushing in a bar connected to the cog for the trapper.

Has baled a few 1000 since and going fine.

cheers nashmach ill try to check over that area of the baler. The baler is new to me but im guessing the bushing is located in or near the knotters? Also i noticed today that it was throwing bales as in not tying on the one side way more often then usual

I am sure you have checked, but did any grease get onto the length bar?

yes there was grease on the length bar when i got it but it was dryed in. do you think that there is not enough friction on the length bar to trip the knotters?

Well that was my first thought. Clean off all the grease and try it. I will dig out the hand book in the morning and check the fault finder index.

    +1
This is where I would look first, the hot weather is melting all the grease and oils and they are running a lot more freely, I'd say reducced friction as a result of oil or grease is causing the problem.

I will scan the pages of the owners manual and post them, there are a few tolerances to set

check the adjustment of the star wheel that measures bale between it and the trip arm if too much play it may drop at irregular intervals

I got no manual with my baler when I got it . I might try and get one to while away the winter nights ( or scramble through when its not working right in the height of haymaking ! )
Anyone know where these manuals can be got for welger ap 45 ? Preferably free
Sorry for jumping on the thread

cheers for that lad, thats something for me to look over. i also noticed today that the little wheel that is in contact with the trip bar is smooth but it seems to have had ridges on it at one time. For fricton maybe? i wonder could these been worn down be the cause either

Just an update for everyone. I finally got round to looking over the baler and after a bit of searching i narrowed it down to grease on the friction wheel. the wheel would slip on the length bar so that is what caused the extra lengths on the bales. A good cleaning with a wire brush and it seems to be tripping at equal times now. Only way to know for sure is to bale away.....Roll on the straw :D. Thanks to all for the help ;)
