dropped my laptop last night and my screen is in shards - the hard drive is grand, but there' s no hope for the screen - is there any merit to trying to get it fixed, or should I just write it off and go shopping for a new laptop

new screen is about 60-90 quid (depending on the screen). If you get fixed in a store they'll lop on another 50-100 quid.

It is generally simple enough to replace yourself though.
However, what I would do is connect it up to an external monitor and make sure the motherboard and everything else is still working fine.

brought it to an unnamed IT repair shop in Cork and 'cowboys' wouldn't go near covering it - they tried to tell me the hard drive had popped and there was nothing wrong with the screen, IT'S IN SHARDS!!!!

then they said there was a problem with the fan - so I just took it back

I got the willies when I was there initially and they had the laptop - a customer came in and said they had it the day previously and they had fixed the fan, but now none of the USB ports were working.............

have resigned myself to buying a new laptop

You can easily test the laptop by plugging it into an external monitor or Tv if it has HDMI.

I did - it's working fine, but I pulled all the info off it just in case..............couldn't believe my ears when they told me the HD popped out - I think they saw a woman and thought 'cher-ching'.............cheeky gits

If you're living anywhere near buttevant, I'll happily do it for you.

It's shocking how many computer repair cowboys are out there.

It's a bit mad to get a new laptop when a screen won't cost anywhere near that.

if you only use it for that basic stuff, .. keep it cheap .. you really don't need pay much, pretty much anything will do what you need.

If you came to me with an going on 6 years laptop looking for a screen replacement I would hesitate to fix it for you to be honest, I would advise you to save the money and buy something new. (not from me, I don't sell machines). You see, you can get the screen done for around 100, your hard drive may not be gone now but it is at the jumping off point along with the other components that do have a fairly predictable life span in time span and hours of use. What happens if you get the screen fixed and something else goes you will feel committed to repair the next problem coz you invested so much in a new screen and so on the cycle continues and next thing you have the price of a new machine spent. Keep in mind a new machine will be real pleasure to use also as it will be super fast in comparison to what your using now.

PC World are doing a laptop at the moment that would suit your needs comfortably for under 300 euro

Follow link below, the first laptop on page is an acer for 298, it will do everything that you mention you want in a laptop. However, the second laptop is much more endowed in terms of memory and storage and is probably worth the extra few euro as it will make your computing experience even more enjoyable. These are entry level machines but more than capable of doing what you listed as your computing needs. It is probably also good advise to look around at more than just PC World, I just use it as an example as to whats out there.
