VRT RULES

    Hi folks,

This maybe covered elsewhere, but I thought to remind folks about the latest VRT rules that now apply.(I'm not a motor dealer BTW)

I only became aware of them myself recently, so this link is worth a read....http://www.revenue.ie/en/online/vrt-calculator.html

Be aware that if you do not have proof of the date of import (landed in ROI),and that must be within the previous 30 days, the NCT people, on behalf of Revenue, will charge you VRT back dated to the date of FIRST REGISTRATION...!!! That equates to VRT multiplied by the age of the vehicle in years...Regardless of what the VRT calculator says, if you don't have a ferry ticket or a sales invoice from a UK/NI/Seller/dealer, then that's what they will do. So don't say you weren't warned! Ring the NCT people and ask if you don't believe me...

I hope this helps save some one a lot of frustration, 'cause I was recently....

    ...er, no.

I bought a 'bike that was in the country for over a year, on UK plates, and I had to pay no arrears.

You are only liable for arrears if you owned the vehicle prior - if it was off the road it's not liable either.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

...well, that's my experience, and the NCT people were adamant this was the case. Anyway folks can make up their own minds when they read the link to revenue...best to ring and make sure.

Always was the case that you had to go through the process in the 30 days, but you must have met a right stickler in the NCT centre. Most are just glad to get the revenue in...... and it should be fairly easy to create an invoice if you already have an original. So if you had a recent dated receipt, doubt they would get hung up on a ferry ticket.
