    Hey all,

Just wondering what's the smallest ring available on a cassette?

Shimano actually produce a nine-tooth cassette, but it seems firmly aimed at the touring/commuting market to give more range when you've only got a single front chainring.

As far as I can tell, there are nine and ten tooth systems out there, but I say "systems" - at the very least you will need to have your wheel built onto the system-specific hub in order to use the smaller cassette. You might need a new derailleur and chain too.

For standard production wheels using a Shimano or Campag freehub body, 11T seems to be the smallest you can get, as far as I can tell.

Afraid not, I know you're old or at least as old as me.

Just another quick cassette related question...

What determines the potential size of a cassette(i.e number of rings) is it the wheel or the frame?

The bike manufacturer generally determines what spec cassette they fit to the bike. The wheel size has nothing to do with it. The frame has little to do with it either as a high ratio cassette can be fitted to literally any bike/frame.

Well my current bike has an 8 speed, can I upgrade it to a 10 speed if i wished?

Probably. But you'll need a 10 speed - cassette, chain, derailleur and shifters.

Yeah I understand that, its just for new wheels I'm thinking of getting, just want to make sure a 10 speed one will fit the bike, as my current groupset was originally a 10 speed, off another bike.

Only if your shifters are 10 speed. Otherwise you'll need to upgrade them too.

The derailleur is not a factor if he wants to go smaller.

    Going bigger, not smaller

OK well check the range of the derailer you have. All you need to know is on that site.

7-11 speed groupsets, cassettes, etc will typically fit on any standard bike. They're all built to a standard size, just the width of the chain varies. So the width of an 8-speed cassette is the same as the width of a 10-speed, just the spacing between cogs varies in order to fit in two additional cogs.

Seamus, are you sure about the 7 speed? In the new bike I bought recently the 7-speed 105 hub and the cassette are narrower than the frame width, which is 130mm. The wheels and the groupset were fitted by the previous owner, so not sure about the history of this.

In some cases you may have to fit a small spacer on the freehub, but by and large yes afair 7-speed will fit on any shimano or sram compatible freehub.

The freehub body itself is the same width, but the total axle width my vary depending on the wheel. If he fitted a track wheel (120mm) in the frame, it'll be quite a bit smaller. Though track wheels don't have freehubs, I guess. He could have just messed about with the cones and spacers on the axles to make it slightly smaller.
