I have a 1980 MF 265 I shook out the hay yesterday no problem, went to row it up today and the pto would not come on, what could be the problem and what sort of cost to repair?

Our 265 used to be hard to put on the PTO. It was an issue with the clutch pack I think some minor adlustmets sorted it out evenually. A few years ago now but don't remenber it being a huge cost.
We found that you could engage the PTO when the tractor was off but not when it was running. Used to start the tractor with the PTO engaged to get us out of trouble until issue was fixed. Not sure if this is a great solution or if it could damage tractor or implements but it worked for us as an emergency measure for a few days.

Yes there is 3 finger bolts on the clutch assy(for adjusting pto disc),theses can be excessed, through an inspection plate under the bell housing.

Altho, this may not be OP's problem.

More info needed. Is it making a grinding nose when selecting PTO??
    Lift arms working??

Hi thanks for the replies, a mechanic friend of mine called and sorted it when I was at work yesterday, don't know what exactly he did but he said it didn't take much.

He kept pressure on the lever to engage pto while starting the tractor. Its fine since, turns on and off as required.

He said I was lucky that I didn't have to split the tractor
